Job Description:
House & Collections Manager
Permanent f/t (37.5 hrs pw)

Are you an accomplished team leader, excited by the challenge of balancing excellent conservation and presentation standards with an innovative approach to programming and the visitor experience that draws upon Cragside’s amazing spirit of place? Do you have the vision to develop a visitor experience that will surprise and delight our visitors and reach out to new audiences? We’re looking for a House and Collections Manager to deliver all of this at one of the North East’s major tourist attractions, a place where futuristic ideas become reality. Can you show-case the quintessential Victorian country house through a modern lens and make it relevant to today’s audiences?

What it's like to work here
Set in the heart of the stunning Northumberland landscape, Cragside is a unique place to work. Here William Armstrong, the brilliant engineer and manufacturer, built a wonder of the Victorian age. Here he created artificial lakes, generated his own hydro-power, pioneered electric lighting, installed telephone systems and built a world of experimentation and innovation that inspired the way we live today.

We carry this ethos into the 21st Century – developing and implementing experimental and innovative ways to bring Cragside to life for today’s visitor. Just as Armstrong’s vision was brought to fruition through creative collaboration, today a multi-disciplinary team works to look after the place in a way that makes it enjoyable and relevant to our visitors, allowing them to connect with it on an emotional level too.

What you'll be doing
Accountable to the General Manager, you will be responsible for a team of staff and volunteers in the day to day operation and performance of the House, as well as its strategic direction. You will be a member of the Strategic Leads Team, which develops and delivers the Property Business Plan and its Key Performance Indicators. The team also includes the General Manager, Visitor Experience Manager, Operations Manager, Commercial Manager, Head Gardener, Lead Ranger and Conservation Manager.

Visitor Experience will be one of your top priorities. Everybody is responsible for visitor experience at Cragside, which is one of the National Trust’s flagship properties. None more so than the Heads of Department who support the Visitor Experience Manager by delivering programming activity as well as day to day operations.

You will ensure excellent care of the house and the 18,500 items in the collection at Cragside, both in that building and on the wider estate, ensuring we maintain our Accredited Museum status. You will be the National Trust’s appointed ‘inventory owner’ for those collections, ensuring that we meet SPECTRUM standards for their documentation and management.
