Job Description:
This is an exciting opportunity to manage within, and develop one or more of the collection areas of the Department of World Cultures. The extensive World Cultures collection of over 82,000 objects incorporates archaeological and ethnographic material and the decorative and fine arts from many cultures beyond Europe, from the past to the present. The recognised strengths of the World Cultures collections are the historic collections that derive from the University of Edinburgh and the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, including collections brought back through early contact with Indigenous peoples in Africa, Asia, Americas and Oceania.

The Department has four sections: Ancient Mediterranean (nearly 12,000 objects including an internationally significant collection of 6000 objects from Ancient Egypt); East and Central Asia (over 30,000 objects with nationally significant collections from China and Japan); Oceania, Africa and Americas (over 24,000 objects with significant collections amassed by early explorers including Captain James Cook (1728–1779), Sir William Parry (1790–1855), Sir Thomas Brisbane (1771–1860), Frederick Beechey (1796–1856), Dr David Livingstone (1813–1873) and Dr John Rae (1813–1893), amongst others); and Middle East and South Asia (over 30,000 objects with significant Iranian and Turkish collections, the strengths of the Iranian collections being attributable largely to the influence of Sir Robert Murdoch Smith (1835-1900)). As a Principal Curator, you will supply a high level of expertise, experience and research leadership in one or more of the collection areas covered by the Department.

As a successful candidate you will take a leading role within the department, including managing curators and assistant curators, and will participate in the research, interpretation and public programme activities of a section and will be expected to contribute to the Department’s input to National Museums Scotland’s special exhibition programme. As a Principal Curator, you should have acknowledged demonstrable research expertise in a relevant specialist area and an established reputation in your discipline. The post-holders will also be required to support the Keeper in managing the Department and helping to achieve its aims and ambitions.
Required Skills:
Applicants should have a degree and postgraduate qualifications in a relevant subject, in addition to proven relevant work experience. An excellent communicator with a proven track record of research and publication, the successful candidate will be organised, methodical, adept at problem solving, a team worker and a strategic thinker. Experience in managing staff and projects, and good ICT skills are also essential. A driving licence is highly desirable.
