Job Description:
Since it opened in 2001, the Jewish Museum Berlin has been a distinctive institution on the landscape of European museums. With its exhibitions, collection, events, and educational work, the museum is a vibrant place of reflection on Jewish history, religion, and culture in Germany. The museum is a foundation with legal personality based in Berlin. It is institutionally funded by the German federal government and currently has an annual budget of approximately €19 million and has a staff of more than 160 people. Its Academy, established in 2012, is dedicated to current socio-political issues. The Jewish Museum Berlin, which currently has about 600,000 visitors per year, will open its new permanent exhibition and inaugurate a new Children’s Museum in 2020.

The Jewish Museum Berlin – a foundation regulated by public law – is seeking a Director to begin work on 1 March 2020.

We are seeking an experienced individual whose professional career has prepared her or him to lead the foundation and to further develop it with commercial, political, and cultural partners in Germany and abroad. This requires the Director to possess very strong resilience, leadership skills, and communication skills.

For this prominent position, we are seeking an individual who will ensure that the Jewish Museum Berlin continues to participate in social discourse, engages with important and sometimes controversial topics, and presents unusual perspectives and formats. She or he will place particular focus on dialogue-oriented and inclusive programming for a broad-ranging national and international audience. In addition, she or he will shape the institution’s ongoing digital evolution.

Your duties:
The Director oversees the foundation, supervises the foundation’s ongoing affairs, makes decisions on all foundation matters outside the purview of the Board of Trustees, and implements the Board of Trustees’ resolutions.

This particularly includes:
• Strategic advancement of the museum and its diverse programming, especially the permanent exhibition, the temporary exhibitions, collection planning, the Academy, the outreach programs, and the Children’s Museum
• Trusting collaboration with the committees of the Foundation
• Maintaining contacts and representing the museum and its programs to the public, especially to cooperation partners from political bodies, cultural institutions, and scientific institutions in Germany and abroad

We expect from you:
• A completed graduate degree (Master or equivalent) in a subject area relevant to the position
• Proven expertise in the history, culture and religion of German Jews/Jews in Germany
• Management and leadership experience, at least in some of the listed areas of responsibility, acquired from working at a museum or a comparable institution
• Confident business-level fluency in written and spoken English
• Mastery of the German language is also required for applicants from abroad
• Skills in acquiring donations, sponsorships, and third-party funding

Other desirable qualifications:
• Excellent teamwork and very good communication skills
• A cooperative, inclusive, and mediating leadership style
• Good national and international connections with cultural and Jewish institutions in Germany and abroad
• Business expertise and cost-consciousness, strategic thinking, and a business approach
• Experience working with boards and committees
• Hebrew language skills are desirable

The position offers you an interesting, versatile role with many creative possibilities in a high-quality and multifaceted environment. In keeping with the position’s prominent status, the remuneration will be based on salary group B5 of the German Federal Civil Service Remuneration table for an initial contract term of five years. This position cannot be performed on a part-time basis.
