Job Description:
As part of the Collections Conservation team at English Heritage you will assist with delivering the care and conservation of our historic collections in the South East, so they can continue to play a key role in bringing history to life.

You will work closely with another Collections Care Assistant and Collections Conservator, South East, as well as the Historic Properties teams at sites. You will help to plan, undertake and support appropriate collections care standards in historic properties and stores including the Archaeological Collection store and Secret Wartime Tunnels at Dover Castle and other sites, mostly across Kent and Sussex. You will focus on: conservation cleaning; environmental monitoring; insect pest monitoring; responding to any emergencies; and assisting with projects.

You will provide collections care training and support to site staff and volunteers relating to conservation housekeeping and provide on-going support through visits. You will champion the work of English Heritage through ‘conservation in action’ which raises awareness of our work to new audiences.

This is a fixed term post to cover the secondment of the current post holder.

1. You will plan, undertake and support appropriate collections care standards in historic properties in Kent and Sussex. With a focus on conservation cleaning, you will also assist with other areas including environmental monitoring; insect pest monitoring; responding to any emergencies; and protection and supervision during hospitality, filming, events and projects.

2. You’ll assist with the completion of realistic conservation cleaning schedules which outline cleaning methods and frequency, for each site that houses a collection (including storage areas) as well as carrying out cleaning.

3. You will develop and maintain excellent working relationships with colleagues responsible for the operation of historic properties and the curation of collections to develop sustainable collections care standards.

4. You will undertake and support insect pest monitoring at sites with vulnerable collections and forward results to the Collections Pest Control Manager.

5. You’ll assist with checking/downloading environmental data and with the maintenance of environmental loggers, sensors and control equipment.

6. You will provide collections care training and support to site staff relating to conservation cleaning and insect pest management and provide on-going support through visits and over the phone.

7. You will assist the Collections Conservator –South East with the establishment of conservation cleaning volunteer roles, including recruitment, training and supervising of volunteers at sites.

8. You’ll assist with conservation cleaning campaigns and project installations at sites across the South East and occasionally in other areas of the country.
Required Skills:
You will have experience of undertaking conservation housekeeping work for historic collections and historic environments. This post will require flexibility to adapt to new challenges as well as confidence working at height and underground in confined spaces. Additionally you will need to have a full driving licence. Excellent communication skills and the ability to think on your feet are essential.

Experience

Essential:
- Experience of undertaking conservation housekeeping work for historic house collections and historic environments
- Experience of basic environmental monitoring
- Experience of insect pest monitoring

Desirable:
- Icon Conservation Technician Qualification or Conservation & Collections Care Technicians Diploma or similar
- Experience of working with and managing volunteers


Skills/knowledge/qualifications

Essential:
- Excellent manual dexterity skills. A patient but efficient approach to completing tasks
- Good organizational skills
- Able to lift objects, work at height, underground and in confined spaces
- Driver’s Licence
- Computer literate

Desirable:
- Experience of using Microsoft


Behaviours:
- Good people and communication skills. Able to influence, motivate and support site staff and volunteers.
- Flexible attitude, comfortable working alone and with a team.

Additional Considerations:
- Occasional overnight stays away from home will also be required.
