We have a unique opportunity for someone who is passionate about great visitor experience and conservation. This job gives you a great variety of hands on operational experience at a small historic house supported by the wider Chartwell team who are 10 minutes away.

As the Duty House and Garden Manager, you’ll play a key role in ensuring the smooth day today running of Quebec House and Garden. Variety is the order of the working day; you’ll be involved in everything from general housekeeping and preparing the house for visitors, to selling tickets or tea in the coach house.

Please note this role involves weekend work and you require you to work all bar one weekend per month. More information will be provided at interview stage.

Accommodation is provided to the post holder for the proper or better performance of his or her duties in accordance with Trust criteria and HMRC rules.

What it's like to work here
Take a step back to the Georgian era and discover the family home of General James Wolfe. Visitors uncover the reality of the Battle of Quebec, his most famous campaign, as well as exploring life in the 1730's when the General was a child here.

This intimate 18th-century family home, with its pretty garden, was the boyhood home of General James Wolfe. Visitors can uncover the reality of the Battle of Quebec in 1759 and reflect on his legacy for both his contemporaries and for us today.

Visitors can also explore how James' family lived in the 1730's, including the food they would have eaten and the toys which would have kept them entertained.

What you'll be doing
This role is responsible for leading the efficient operation of the Property's Visitor Welcome, presentation & conservation standards, membership recruitment, Gift Aid on Entry, catering and second-hand books. Working with the heads of department you will maximize income and profitability within the guidelines, policies and procedures set by National Trust (Enterprises) Ltd and the Member Promotion Manager.

You’ll be responsible for the daily opening of the house with the volunteer tour guide and room guide team, ensuring appropriate resources are in place to be able to provide a consistently excellent service for our visitors. Working with a team of Volunteer Conservation Assistants, you'll supervise the team responsible for implementing weekly conservation routines, preventive conservation and annual deep cleaning programme within the house to ensure excellent standards of care, delivering strategies to improve conservation.

You’ll enjoy telling visitors about our fascinating history, sharing tales from the past as well as your personal experience of working here.

Who we're looking for
We'd love to hear from you if you:
• Are inspired by all things Heritage and Conservation
• Have good working knowledge of collections care and preventive conservation with an awareness of Museum Accreditation standards
• Have an impressive eye for even the smallest of details and are comfortable working from height to help keep the house well-presented at all times
• Have knowledge of Health & Safety and emergency procedures.
• Have the ability to support volunteers to perform at their best
• Have excellent people skills and are a good team player, enabling strong relationships to be built and maintained
• Have some knowledge and experience of managing budgets and finance
• Have the ability to remain calm in a crisis
• Enjoy working with limited daily supervision
