Job Description:
Curator, Maritime Arts & Culture – The Mariners’ Museum in Newport News, Virginia seeks an energetic and creative Curator to research, interpret, and exhibit the Museum’s vast collections. Maritime history experience, seasoned connoisseurship, and an eye for quality are essential prerequisites. The Curator will play a lead role in the Museum’s dynamic inter-disciplinary team currently engaged in a collaborative effort to reinterpret and reinstall the Museum’s permanent galleries.

Showcasing one of the premiere maritime collections in the world, the Curator will work in cooperation with exhibit designers, web & interactive developers, and other colleagues to create permanent, temporary and traveling exhibitions; publications; websites; and educational programs that will break new ground in the presentation of global maritime history and culture.

The opening of the USS Monitor Center, scheduled for 2007, will put the Museum in the international spotlight and dramatically increase visitation. Founded in 1930 and accredited by the American Association of Museums, The Mariners’ Museum is dedicated to illuminating mankind’s experience with the sea and the events that shaped the course and progress of human civilization; and to preserving and interpreting the history and culture of the sea.
Required Skills:
The Mariners’ Museum seeks candidates with experience in presenting exhibitions to broad and varied audiences and working successfully in teams that include stakeholders from staff, Board, and community. The successful candidate must possess energy, enthusiasm, and a passion for popularizing global maritime art and history. Superior writing and research skills, the ability to handle multiple projects, a commitment to making the museum vital and visitor friendly, a strong interest/expertise in global maritime arts, culture, and history, and a Masters degree in a closely related field are all requirements.
