Overall Purpose of the Job
HMS Belfast, a cruiser launched in 1938, remained in active service with the Royal Navy until 1965 and is the last remaining example of the big-gunned warships built for the RN in the first half of the 20th Century. Initially preserved for the nation by a private body, HMS Belfast became part of the Imperial War Museum in 1978 and is open to the public seven days a week. The ship provides interactive displays and exhibitions, a comprehensive education programme for schools and the hire of accommodation for conferences, private functions and corporate hospitality.
You will be required to work as part of a team to provide a high quality environment for members of the public visiting HMS Belfast.
Principle Accountabilities
1. Security
This will include responsibility for the security of the ship, artefacts and safe operations as an historic Naval attraction. In addition you will assist with the security of the souvenir shop.
2. Visitor Care and Invigilating
You must be aware at all times of the diversity of the general public and the special attention and needs they may require. It is important that the individual is courteous and helpful at all times towards the visitors to the ship.
3. Cleaning and Maintenance
It is paramount that the highest standards of appearance and cleanliness are provided on HMS Belfast at all times towards visitors to the Ship.
(i) Cleaning will include waste management, maintenance of compartments and stowage’s and general presentation of the ship. This includes the cleaning of toilets and bathrooms.
(ii) Routine low-level maintenance will include oil and greasing routines, lamp changing and painting to a competent standard.
4. Portering and Miscellaneous Duties
This includes embarking and disembarking stores, moving exhibits and furniture and carrying out general duties as required. Staff may be required to drive motor vehicles if legally licensed to do so.
5. General
The unique working environment of the ship, which extends over 9 deck levels, requires that you are able to climb stairways repeatedly on a daily basis. You will also be expected to acquire a thorough knowledge of the ship, her history and all emergency procedures. During your induction period you will be required to work through the Visitor Service Assistant’s ‘task book’, which will form the basis of this learning.
Yeomen are required to be smart and well presented. A uniform will be provided which must be cared for and worn in a manner, which ensures they remain, presentable at all times.
It should be noted that the above information is not comprehensive and that other responsibilities or duties that are considered to fall within the remit of the Visitor Service Assistant post will arise from time to time.
Please note that the post holder will be referred to as Yeoman on board HMS Belfast rather than a Visitor Service Assistant

Essential Criteria
At least 6 months or over experience of working with the public and/or on a customer focused environment
A suitable practical ability to undertake minor maintenance tasks
An awareness and understanding of the principles of Health & Safety and security
Key competencies
Well presented
Good oral communication skills
Fitness for the working environment e.g. willingness to climb stairways repeatedly on a daily basis
A flexible attitude towards work and willingness to weekends/bank holidays
Ability to work on own initiative
Capable of working as part of a team
Prepared to undertake a range of cleaning task
Excellent customer care skills
Desirable criteria
Experience of security work ideally gained in a customer focused environment
Trained in manual handling techniques but training will be provided
First Aid training
Basic IT skills
