Job Description:
Reports to to: Head of Organics Conservation

Job Purpose:
Conservation and preservation of the National Maritime Museum’s collection of organic objects including ship models.

Key Responsibilities:
•Maintain, conserve and restore objects of predominantly organic origin to support the Museum’s public programme to agreed deadline, time and standards.
•Develop ship model conservation expertise to a specialist level.
•Contribute to the delivery of the Museum’s major capital projects as appropriate.
•Contribute to the care of collections (preservation) programme as required.
•Contribute to the Conservation Department’s outreach and learning programme as appropriate.
•Conduct condition reports on objects and advise on their suitability for display, loan, acquisition, transport etc. as required.
•Work closely with other colleagues in delivering the annual conservation programme to time, standard and budget.
•Advise on the design of mechanical parts or mounts needed for relevant objects.
•Maintain accurate records and documentation using the Museum’s computerised database (currently Mimsy XG).
•Manage and supervise external contractors undertaking maintenance, movement, reassembly and conservation of organic objects outside the Museum’s expertise.
•Supervise students and work placements as required.
•Develop and supervise a small team of conservation and collections care volunteers.
•Contribute to the development and delivery of the Museum’s public engagement programme as required.
•Represent the Department, in a liaison role, on cross-departmental projects as required.
•Maintain the organic conservation workshop including ensuring the workshop and machinery comply with all health and safety legislation needed for this area.
•The above mentioned tasks are neither exclusive nor exhaustive and the post holder may be called upon to carry out such other appropriate duties as may be required by the Museum within the competence of the post holder.
Required Skills:
Skills and Experience:

Essential

•Degree or equivalent in conservation
•Work experience of organic conservation
•Prepared to work towards conservation accreditation in specialised field
•Ability to work on own and as part of a team
•Good observation and reporting skills including computer competency
•Good IT skills
•Experience of using Mimsy XG or other similar collections database
•Good communication skills

Desirable
•Work experience of organic conservation; ethnographic or ship model conservation or demonstrably-related craft skills

Terms and Conditions:

The post-holder will work a 41 hour week, core hours Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm with an additional hour to be worked in agreement with line management.

Salary: £21,000 - £26,000 per annum
