Description: |
To lead the East Asian Collections area of the Library and to implement its strategic priorities; to engage with relevant research communities; to understand user needs and reflect them in content development and interpretation; to develop and maintain partnerships with other libraries, museums, research institutions and technology partners as appropriate.
The CBL is a collegial organisation and the holder of the post will be expected to work in consultation with his/her professional
colleagues.
Key responsibilities include:
• develop and coordinate displays in the permanent exhibition galleries.
• organise, curate and project manage special exhibitions.
• give public lectures on relevant aspects of the Collection.
• make a personal contribution to the CBL’s research reputation.
• advise on and oversee all research projects, publications, and public programmes relating to the East Asian Collections.
• keep abreast of research trends and the changing needs of researchers in relation to the collections for which responsible.
• collaborate with the Education Department in the generation of educational material and special events and in the training of volunteer guides.
• line manage the Curatorial Assistant in keeping with the CBL’s culture of engagement and collegiality.
• facilitate visiting researchers and special interest groups.
• oversee ongoing projects for the publication of aspects of the East Asian Collections.
• continue ongoing documentation of the East Asian Collections in the collections management database (Adlib).
• answer general queries on the East Asian Collections and the cultures they represent.
• engage with marketing colleagues in relation to PR and media queries on the East Asian Collections.
• assist with such matters as requested by the Head of Collections.

| Required Skills: |
• The minimum requirement for the post is the possession of a postgraduate university degree in a relevant discipline or subject.
• Research interest in one of the areas covered under the East Asian Collections, together with a proven record of academic publication.
• Experience working in a museum, research library, academic or other relevant environment.
• Understanding of the ethical issues associated with collections care.
• Understanding of new developments in digitisation and new and emerging research trends and methodologies.
• Ability to manage complex workloads and to meet deadlines under pressure.
• Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
• Good/basic computer skills are necessary as is experience with Adlib or a comparable collection management system.
Desired Competency
• A PhD in a topic related to the East Asian Collections.
• Good spoken and written Chinese or Japanese.
• Experience of successfully exploring and developing collaborations with both the museum and academic sectors.
• Experience of effectively overseeing the delivery of projects.
• Good professional network. |
