Post: EDUCATION OFFICER
Hours: 37 Hours a week including bank holidays, evenings and weekends
Reporting to: Chief Executive
Line Manager of: Freelance staff; volunteers
Key Relationships: Staff team including Collections Manager, Community Curator, Volunteer Manager, Business Development Manager, Site/facilities Manager; freelancers, volunteers, schools and education providers
Main purpose and scope of the post:
To develop and deliver education activity across the Trust’s sites, including a formal education programme and informal learning activities
Principal Duties
1 Lead on the development of a Learning Strategy.
2 Develop, co-ordinate and deliver a formal education programme across the Trust’s sites including stored collections.
3 Promote the Trust’s education programme to schools and other educational partners
4 Develop and deliver informal learning activities and events as part of the Trust’s public events programme, including Dinosaur Coast activities.
5 Manage and develop the Schools Loans Box service
6 Contribute to the development of interpretation at all sites
7 Monitor the use of resources and budget dedicated to learning activities and seek further funding opportunities
8 Act as the main contact for school bookings and maintain up to date booking records
9 Set up and implement an evaluation mechanism for the education programme and public events
10 Prepare statistics on learning and education as appropriate
11 Manage and train freelancers and volunteers as part of the delivery of the education and informal learning events programme
12 Oversee the co-ordination of work placements and other work-based learning opportunities including secondments, exchanges and internships.
13 Ensure correct and safe working practices by volunteers and freelancers, ensuring the welfare of all staff and participants in line with the Trust’s Health and Safety Policy.
14 Represent the Trust locally, regionally and nationally in respect of education and the Trust’s work
15 Undertake other duties as required.
16 As required, attend the Trust’s premises for emergency call outs.

ESSENTIAL
Qualifications and Experience
• First degree
• 2 years experience of delivering learning in an education or museum/gallery context
Knowledge and Competencies
• An understanding of how people learn, of different learning styles and of how this impacts on museum-based learning.
• Knowledge of the national curriculum and of the current agendas at all levels of formal and further education
• Knowledge of contract management.
• Deals well with unpredictable problems as they arise on a day-to-day basis, applying new learning all the time
• Remains focused on priorities and does all that is necessary to deliver results. Adapts well to changing demands, overcomes obstacles and remains in control when under pressure.
• Provides support to others and creates an open culture and productive working environment. Actively collaborates with colleagues.
• Demonstrates a genuine desire to work with and serve the public. Engages positively with users, develops a clear understanding of their needs and does all that is feasible to satisfy them.
• Manages budgets effectively. Demonstrates a responsible attitude to available resources and uses them efficiently and effectively.

Skills and Attributes
• A demonstrable passion for museums and galleries and a commitment to object-based learning
• A commitment to collaborative working with stakeholders and partners, and an understanding of the needs of successful partnership working.
• Excellent presentation skills, focussed and structured in written reports and engaging and inspirational in oral communication.
• Practical skills in leading object-based activities with at least one of the following: children and young people in formal education, children and young people out-of-school, family groups, adults and/or mixed age groups in wider community settings; academic groups and those in further education; older people.
• Proven project management skills.
• Proven staff management skills

• Post grad qualification in education or museum studies
