Job Description:
The Carnegie Museum of Natural History is seeking a post-doctoral fellow and interim curator for the Anthropocene. This position has a limited term of two years, although there is the possibility of extension if the fellow/curator is successful and further funding is developed. The position’s primary responsibility is to work with the Director and the Director’s senior leadership (Directors of Science & Research, Education, Lifelong Learning, Exhibit Experience, Finance, and Marketing), the museum’s science staff, as well as Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh central staff (e.g. CMP Director of Strategic Initiatives, CMP’s Senior Project Manager, Nexus Initiatives) to develop an intellectual and infrastructural framework for the new Center for Anthropocene Studies. The Center is intended to be interdisciplinary in its foci across art and the humanities with science at its core. The successful candidate will demonstrate a plan for developing a research program that results in publications of high quality and visibility.
Required Skills:
The successful candidate will have a PhD in an area embedded in or cognate to Anthropocene science, while demonstrating a broad awareness of cultural, historical and artistic themes associated with advanced considerations of Anthropocene themes. Prior post-doctoral or equivalent professional experience is desirable.

The successful candidate will have strong written, oral and visual communication skills demonstrated through past success with scientific and popular publications, public speaking, negotiations, fund raising, and project management. Skills in working across traditional lines of reporting and of inquiry will greatly enhance success.

The fellow-curator must have the capability to conceptualize and develop collection, archival, field, or laboratory-based research. It is especially desirable that this research reach across disciplines in its approach and its audience. The fellow/curator must be capable of obtaining external grants for research. It is desirable that the fellow-curator develop and maintain a highly visible profile in the scientific community.

Some portions of the work are office-based and primarily sedentary in nature, so no special demands are required. However, the research components may involve field expeditions and/or experiments in which case the successful candidate must demonstrate physical abilities sufficient to carry out their planned research program.
