Job Title:     House & Collections Manager
Organisation:     Kingston Lacy - National Trust
Salary:     £32,000 p.a.
Type:     Full-Time Position
Location:     Wimborne, Dorset, England
Closing Date:     Sunday, April 9th, 2017
Job Ref No:     IRC49675
Job Description:
House & Collections Manager
Contract: Permanent, full time
Location: Wimborne

You wouldn’t expect to find an Italian palace in Dorset, let alone one with a world-class art collection with masterpieces that most galleries would die for! Set in a designed landscape with ancient Egyptian obelisk, play areas, running routes, cycle rides, even a learn-to-grow-your-own-food garden, Kingston Lacy offers staff, volunteers and visitors with a fascinating place to visit and re-visit.

As well as being an incredible place to work, this House & Collections Manager opportunity is one of the most important in the SW region and offers an immense professional opportunity.

The outstanding art collection is one of the main attractions to this beautiful Italian-inspired mansion. As one of the National Trust’s ‘treasure houses’, the 45 strong team have exciting times ahead as they embark on major conservation projects to preserve this 8,500 estate and its rare collection of artefacts. A Japanese garden and tearoom and community growing spaces are also among the key attractions at Kingston Lacy. The property has a rural location, so it’s likely you will require your own transport to get here.

About the role

You will have a central role to play in helping us to engage people in this wonderful place as we continue to care for it. You’ll need to balance managing the conservation demands of a complex and busy house, which is open all year round, while enabling visitor access through the highest standards of presentation, interpretation and programming.

It will be your responsibility to lead and manage an enthusiastic team of house staff and volunteers, supporting their professional development and inspiring them to perform at their very best. But not just that – you will be a major player in the property leadership team, helping shape and deliver our exciting plans across the portfolio.

We will expect you to be an exceptional role model for collaborative working, building strong relationships across property departments and with specialist staff in our internal consultancy, including Curators, Conservators, Registrars, Building Surveyors and Visitor Experience Consultants. You will also have an important role to play in fostering key external partnerships, particularly within the museum and archive sectors.

PLEASE NOTE: This post will be required to take part on a roster to provide daily cover as key point of contact for escalation of emergency and security issues or customer complaints.

About you

As our House & Collections Manager you will have a true passion for conservation and curatorship; someone with a natural flair for sharing their insight into our history. You’ll also have experience leading people within a similar museum or heritage operation, which is open to the public. In summary you will need to demonstrate on your CV:

• Inspirational leadership and people management experience, including leading teams through change.
• The ability to be a team player and work collaboratively, internally and externally.
• A formal qualification in Museum Studies or similar relevant subject.
• A creative approach to engagement and access for our visitors.
• Excellent communication skills including influencing and negotiation.
• Good planning and programming skills.

And you will clearly demonstrate in your application that you have:

• Collections management experience in a museum or historic property environment, including documentation planning and supporting the administration of loans and exhibitions.
• Sound experience of preventive conservation and caring for collections in a historic house context.
• Experience of building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• A proven track record of delivering projects including managing budgets and operational risk.
• A full UK driving licence is also required.

Experience of working across multiple sites would be desirable, as would experience of working with collections of an international standard. Fundamentally, we’re looking for an individual who is passionate about delivering high standards of conservation and an exceptional house experience for our visitors, and supporting our committed team of staff and volunteers.
