Job Summary
We are looking for a interim Head of Public Programmes to lead the Public Programmes team to deliver a lively, relevant and stimulating programme of exhibitions, events, publications and other public-facing activities for Wellcome Collection in order to help achieve Wellcome’s aims as set out in the Strategic Approach and enhance the cultural and public profile of the Wellcome Trust and its work.

Leadership and strategy
• Leading the overall strategy for programming activities in Wellcome Collection to deliver core programmes of changing exhibitions and events that meet the goals of the Wellcome Collection Strategy
• Overseeing the development of Wellcome Collection’s specific strategies for touring exhibitions, youth programmes, publishing and the Wellcome Book Prize so that these contribute to the overall reputation of Wellcome Collection
• Demonstrating intellectual leadership and entrepreneurship around new initiatives to extend the reach of Wellcome Collection and in so doing to achieve the broader aims of the Wellcome Trust

External relationships and partnerships
• Being the public face for Wellcome Collection’s programmes and maintaining and developing Wellcome Collection’s national and international reputation for innovative cultural programming related to health
• Building and maintaining strategic relationships with other cultural venues and with key individuals in the fields of arts and culture in the UK and overseas
• Ensuring that the Public Programmes team works closely with residents of the Wellcome Collection Hub and colleagues across Wellcome (especially in Science, Innovations, Public Engagement and Humanities & Social Science) to exchange ideas and identify development opportunities for public programming

Management and operational
• Oversight of operational activities including:
• Setting and monitoring operational plans and budgets within Public Programmes
• Contribution to the development and monitoring of operational plans and KPIs for Wellcome Collection as a whole
• Providing expert analysis and review of activity within Wellcome Collection, including written and verbal reports to the Executive Leadership Team and Board of Governors
• Ensuring there are rigorous and robust processes in order to:
• generate ideas for exhibitions, events, publications, tours, international projects and Book Prize etc
• oversee the decision-making process across the organisation about which to produce and oversee the efficient and effective production of innovative and popular shows, books and other activities
• Working closely with the Head of Operations for Wellcome Collection to ensure the most effective and impactful marketing strategy for Wellcome Collection, as well as integrated and operationally effective front of house functions
• Building and managing highly-performing teams to devise and deliver these programmes
• Ensuring that all projects have good governance and project management arrangements in place
• Being an active advocate for Wellcome’s principles and embodying these principles in your work

Budgets and finance
• Oversight and accountability for project and operational budgets of approximately £3.7M per annum
Required Skills:
• Appropriate management experience in a public cultural institution, with accountability for staff and budget management
• Track record of innovative and popular public programming – with understanding of cross platform activity: events, exhibitions, conferences, digital, publications and broadcast
• Significant background in sciences, humanities and arts
• Experience of strategic venue planning plus board-level accountability and advocacy for public programmes
• Experience of project and financial management
• Experience of event and/or exhibition development and management
• Proven ability to directly produce and manage exhibitions and performance/debate/theatre
• Excellent verbal and communication skills. Confident public speaking skills; stakeholder engagement at all levels; and media work
• Good understanding of design and architectural work (visual and spatial judgement)
• Excellent understanding of interdisciplinary work and practice
• Proven ability to deal with all levels of staff and the general public and build internal and external relationships, gaining the respect and trust of staff
• Able to present technical information to a lay public

Education & Qualifications
• Masters degree in relevant subject or equivalent experience gained through informal/independent study, evidenced by e.g. publication/conference papers
• Some working knowledge of current and/or historical bioscience, medicine and health issues gained through academic study, self-directed study or professional experience
