English Heritage has begun an exciting programme of property investment and development projects in the South West Territory at properties such as Pendennis Castle in Falmouth, Wroxeter Roman Town and the Stonehenge temporary exhibition programme. To meet the increase in workload the Collections Conservation team are recruiting an additional Conservation post for a 12 month fixed term, to manage and undertake the care and conservation of collections and interiors within sites and projects in the South West.
The post will require you to deliver and maintain appropriate collections care standards – conservation cleaning, environmental monitoring and control (humidity, temperature, light, dust & pollutants), insect pest monitoring, integrated emergency planning, protection (during building works, functions, filming) and transport and storage. You will also need to be the day to day advocate for the care of interiors and collections during project team meetings and on site during projects, working closely with contractors undertaking work during projects inside historic buildings to ensure that collections and interiors are suitably protected from damage.

You will have a recognised qualification in conservation. This post will require flexibility to adapt to new challenges, as well as the willingness to travel extensively within the South West. Excellent communication skills and the ability to think on your feet are essential.

This post is fixed term for 12 months from August 2017.

Required Skills:
Training, experience & qualifications
• First degree or postgraduate qualification in collections conservation
• Post graduation experience in preventive conservation/collections care
• Experience of working with a range of heritage professionals
• Experience of working on large and complex projects
• Publication record relating to collections care.
• Accredited Conservator/ Restorer in preventive conservation or equivalent
• Experience of working in historic houses

Knowledge & skills
• Current understanding of preventive conservation standards applied to the historic house context
• Computer literate with knowledge of databases
• Physically fit and confident working on ladders and scaffolding
• Driver’s License

Interpersonal skills
• Excellent communicator and influencer with proven ability to build and sustain positive relationships outside own area - across teams and disciplines.
• Excellent self awareness: strong sense of personal strengths and weaknesses and of impact on others
• Self motivator and team player
• Systematic approach to large-scale challenges
• Flexibility to respond to project timetables and ability to work to deadlines
