Job Description:
Commercial Lead
Manchester Art Gallery
Permanent, full-time (35 hours)

Develop the commercial potential of a unique cultural offer, in an iconic building that sits at the heart of one of the UK’s most dynamic cities.

Manchester Art Gallery is a Manchester success story. Established in 1882 the gallery showcases the best art and ideas from across the world, inside an iconic building that sits at the heart of one of the UK’s most dynamic cities. Its 45,000 strong collection spans six centuries of fine art, design, craft, photography and fashion, with a particularly rich collection of 19th-century art, including a large number of outstanding Pre-Raphaelite paintings. Our visitor numbers have climbed spectacularly over the last five years, with 608,000 visitors last year and projected 30% increase this year thanks to our successful exhibition programme, our refurbished gallery shop, and our new in-house gallery café (delivered in partnership by Manchester Art Gallery Development Co Ltd with award-winning Manchester chef Mary-Ellen McTague).

A third of our income is raised through grant-funding, commercial activity and fundraising. Continuing to diversify our income streams is a key priority over the next 5 years and this new role has been created to increase our economic resilience and maximise the income generating potential of our unique, world class gallery, collection and public offer.

We are looking an enthusiastic, astute, creative and committed individual who will develop a new and dynamic approach to commercial activities - developing a new approach to business events and corporate hire that realises the benefit of a unique cultural venue; enhancing our retail offer (in the shop and on-line); and leading the new café and catering business to create a destination café in the heart of the city with significant opportunities for increased net income.
