Type:     Full-Time Position
Location:     Ballynahinch, N.Ireland
Closing Date:     Sunday, October 22nd, 2017
Job Ref No:     IRC56523
Job Description:
Permanent f/t (37.5 hrs pw)

The National Trust is significantly investing in curatorship, increasing the number of curators and developing our capability and confidence across the organisation. Curators at the Trust are influential and collaborative, working with a wide range of people and using their deep knowledge and understanding to influence and advise on the care of our collections and places, develop research agendas and create high quality, presentation, interpretation and programming.

What it's like to work here
The National Trust plays an immensely important role in the conservation of, and access to, Northern Ireland’s historic environment and we regularly punch above our weight. From the World Heritage Site of the Giant’s Causeway, to vernacular industrial heritage sites such as Patterson’s Spade Mill, we care for a fabulous range of properties. They include great houses such as Castle Coole, Florence Court, Castle Ward and Mount Stewart, with their diverse and rich collections, gardens, parks and demesnes, as well as superb landscapes, including parts of the Mourne Mountains and Strangford Lough, which, as well as being places of great beauty are internationally recognised wildlife habitats.

What you'll be doing
As a Curator you will join a largely new Curatorial team, which is tasked with providing excellent research and knowledge to guide and support our property staff, and to ensure our visitors’ experience is of the highest quality. You will help deliver the highest standards of presentation and interpretation and play a key role in championing and enhancing the spirit of place of each of our unique properties.

As well as supporting a diverse portfolio of properties, as Curator you’ll need to build strong and influential relationships with specialists and operational teams. You’ll be a skilled communicator and able to enthuse and inspire others.
You’ll ensure that everything we do balances our need to conserve our heritage, with our need to continue to enhance our emotional engagement with visitors, whilst retaining our “Spirit of Place” that makes each property unique.

Who we're looking for
In order to be successful in this role you'll need to have:
• Experience of building relationships and of working collaboratively with a range of internal and external stakeholders in order to deliver curatorial outcomes
• Significant knowledge across two or more of the following areas: history, art history and the applied arts, landscape, archaeology, architectural history, gardens/parks, and their practical application in the context of working with historic buildings, collections and the historic environment.
• Successful track record of leading high quality and creative interpretation, presentation and programming
• Experience of commissioning, undertaking and disseminating research
• Significant knowledge and experience of current best practice in relation to care and management of historic buildings, landscapes, and collections care including Museum Accreditation standards
• The ability to work in a matrix organisation, at pace and with a high workload
