Job Description:
Dundee Heritage Trust is responsible for two accredited and 5-star rated museums, Discovery Point/RRS Discovery and Verdant Works. Both museums hold Recognised Collections of National Significance.

A capital development is underway at Discovery Point that will see the creation of new galleries and improvements to existing galleries, due for completion by Easter 2018. It will also create a new multi-purpose learning and activity space, ‘Polarama’.

This new position of Audience Engagement Officer is a two year post funded by Museums Galleries Scotland and the Foyle Foundation. We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative person to join our team to develop and deliver a programme of events, activities and resources to attract new audiences to the museums to help capitalise on the above development and in light of the planned opening of the V&A Dundee in the second half of 2018.

Audiences we would particularly like to target include groups currently under-represented, such as under-5s, young adults, minorities and older people. Events and activities will include art, dance, drama, music, storytelling and reminiscence sessions.

The postholder will play an important role in meeting the needs of new and existing audiences through consulting with various community groups and partners.

The main duties will be:

• To identify and attract new audiences to the museum
• Work in partnership with local cultural organisations and community groups
• To develop and deliver informal learning opportunities, including events and activities for families
• To develop and deliver community activities, both at the museum and as outreach visits
• To contribute to Dundee Heritage Trust’s overall learning and access programme
• To assist with the recruitment and supervision of volunteers
• To carry out evaluation of events and activities delivered as part of the project
• Undertake marketing to promote the programme including producing ‘What’s On’ literature, writing press releases and developing social media activity.

The post will be based at Discovery Point where the bulk of activity will be centred but will also provide support for activities at Verdant Works.

Occasional weekend and evening work may be required throughout the year and the Audience Engagement Officer will be expected to take a flexible approach to the duties.
Required Skills:
The Audience Engagement Officer should:
• be educated to degree level or have equivalent experience in a similar role
• Either have a museum/heritage postgraduate qualification, or relevant experience or have an education postgraduate qualification, or relevant experience
• have experience of museum or gallery learning in a similar role
• have experience of the development, management and implementation of informal learning within a museum, including
o Developing family/kids’ activities, including worksheets and handling kits/dressing up
o Developing and managing group visits, ie youth group visits and adult group visits
• have experience of developing an events programme
• have experience of developing audiences within a museum or similar environment
• have experience of partnership working
• have experience of improving intellectual access within a museum
• have experience of supervising volunteers
• have IT skills for word processing, email and social media
• have experience of applying for external funding
• have experience of monitoring and evaluating projects

The Audience Engagement Officer should also:

• be inquisitive and willing to constantly acquire new knowledge
• have excellent personal communication skills and be enthusiastic with visitors
• be flexible in dealing with a variety of tasks
• enjoy working as part of a busy team
• have enthusiasm for providing a good quality service to visitors of all ages
• want to work in an ever-changing, developing environment
• be able to move equipment/furniture to set-up/set-down workshops and events
