Job Description:
Keswick Museum is an independent charitable business with a wide ranging local collection and a vision to ‘help local people and visitors share their love of Keswick and the Lake District’ through exhibitions and engagement programmes. We attract well over 20,000 visitors a year, providing our main source of income. We are an Accredited Museum and maintaining this status is important to us.

The Trustees are ambitious and are looking for a dynamic Museum Manager to take a strong operational and strategic lead to ensure the organisation meets its manifesto and is financially sustainable.

Developing an enhanced marketing strategy and improved income will be a key part of the role, we are seeking someone with proven experience of increasing revenue in the cultural sector. We need a strong communicator and negotiator who is able to spot new opportunities and partnerships to maximise income and achieve targets.

The successful candidate also needs to have an excellent understanding of collection care and museum best practice and demonstrate the skills and experience to maintain our Accredited status.

The ability to motivate both the small team of permanent staff and the extensive volunteer network is essential.

Salary: In the region of £28-£32k p.a. plus performance related bonus
Monday to Friday, 37 hours per week
includes occasional out-of-hours and weekend work

Brief Description of Job: To be responsible for the running of Keswick Museum
Responsible To: KMAG Management Ltd (The Board)
Responsible For: Paid staff, volunteer staff

Background: Keswick Museum and Art Gallery (KMAG) was the first purpose built museum in Cumbria, opening in 1898. It has been managed by the local authority in the past, but re-opened in 2014 after a complete refurbishment and is now run by a self sufficient Trust with a large group of local volunteers, a small staff and a lot of community support. It consistently ‘punches above its weight’. This is an exciting stage in the Museum’s development with an ambitious Board encouraging the development of new commercial opportunities whilst continuing our programme of high quality exhibitions and events

Main Duties and Responsibilities: To manage all aspects of Keswick Museum on a day to day basis. To encourage and facilitate the use and development of the Museum as an enhanced heritage and visitor destination. Core to this is the development of income generating opportunities. To maintain the Accreditation of the museum. To continue the excellent levels of interpretation of the collection via exhibitions. To work with current partners especially the Mountain Heritage Trust, and to develop new partnerships.

COMMERCIAL
- prioritise the financial sustainability of the Museum
- implement an enhanced marketing and awareness campaign to increase visitor numbers and thereby increase income
- explore innovative ways or maximizing existing income streams (eg the shop and cafe) and developing new ideas
- developing and maximizing income from grants, sponsors and partnership agreements
CURATORIAL
- to have overall responsibility for the management and care of the collections
- to maintain the Museum’s Accredited status
- to develop the interpretation of the collection in the permanent gallery space
- to ensure delivery of successful programmes of learning, engagement and exhibitions
- to participate in relevant professional networks
STAFF
- to manage a small team of permanent staff
- to motivate a large volunteer team
- to oversee Learning activities and liaison with schools and other groups
- to ensure compliance with KMAG staff policies and procedures

OPERATIONAL
- to participate in professional networks (in particular the Cumbria Museum Directors Group) and maintain up-to-date knowledge of the museum and heritage sector
- to maintain regular contact with the Friends of Keswick Museum and all stakeholders and funders
to work with the Board to ensure the environmental, social and economic sustainability of Keswick Museum and Art Gallery
- to ensure compliance in operations with all relevant legislation and with KMAG policies and procedures
- to act as a keyholder
- to maintain up to date policies and procedures
- to address in the first instance, comments or complaints from members of the public, user groups and other sources, referring such matters to the board where necessary

GENERAL:
- to work closely with the Board of Trustees
- to keep the Board informed of significant issues and developments both locally and nationally which affect the museum
Required Skills:
Requirements and Criteria for Selection

Education, Qualifications and Specialist Training:
• Degree or recognised professional qualification in the arts/museum/heritage sector, or related discipline - essential
• Membership of relevant professional organisations - desirable
• Commitment to continuing professional development - essential
• Minimum of 3 years' experience of working in the cultural sector - essential

Job Related Skills / Experience:
• The day-to-day operation of an arts/ museum/heritage facility - essential
• Generating and increasing revenue streams - essential
• Building relationships with key stakeholders - essential
• Management of staff and volunteers - essential
• Preparation of exhibitions and displays - desirable
• Organisation of events programmes - desirable
• Developing marketing and promotional materials - desirable
• Experience in managing a museum collection - essential
• Experience of grant applications and administration - desirable

Personal Competencies
• Ability to communicate and liaise with a wide range of individuals and groups, both professional and voluntary backgrounds - essential
• Ability to communicate and liaise with members of the public of all ages and backgrounds, in a polite manner - essential
• Ability to work at flexible times as necessary, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays - essential
• Appropriate working knowledge of ICT - essential
