Summary
Opportunities like this don’t come around very often. A General Manager role in the National Trust is both challenging and rewarding in equal measure; it is the driving force behind operational performance and the key leadership role within property groups which operate with a significant degree of autonomy. You will lead from the front, turning strategy into reality and delivering across a broad range of operational areas. What’s more is that you’ll do this for an organisation you can really believe in as we continue to look after special places for ever for everyone.

What it's like to work here
Quarry Bank is one of Britain’s greatest industrial heritage sites, situated just outside Manchester. Visitors can step back in time, exploring the contrasting working and domestic lives of the mill masters and mill workers. They can tour the mill, Quarry Bank House, the Apprentice House, and a worker’s cottage in Styal village; as well as the restored picturesque gardens and pleasure grounds, and the beautiful wider estate. It’s an exciting time to work at Quarry Bank, as the property completes the delivery of a £10m visitor experience project. Visitor numbers have increased significantly in recent years, with further growth anticipated, creating both opportunities and challenges.

What you'll be doing
As well as having an eye on the day to day, you’ll be working with our project team to deliver the final stages, and the legacy, of the Quarry Bank project. You will have a plan for the future in line with the national and regional strategy. You’ll be part of a successful wider GM team across The North, you’ll work with our internal Consultancy and external partners to achieve our goals and champion the NT cause message. You’ll manage a number of Heads of Department, each with their own specialty, from Countryside Management, to Visitor Experience, Retail and Catering. You’ll need to bring a positive, can-do attitude to the team, and your motivational style will inspire them to deliver outstanding results across all areas of the property, in order to generate the funds to invest back into further conservation and development.

Please note: the Quarry Bank portfolio includes Nether Alderley Mill, a medieval flour mill nearby.

Who we're looking for
You must be able to drive and direct change across a diverse remit. We have some ambitious visitor and revenue targets so you'll need to be brilliant with finances, people and projects. You’ll need to know when to delegate, and when to take ownership. Everything you do will be in harmony with our values and ambitions, but it will also make perfect commercial and financial sense.

With a wide range of skills in your toolkit, you'll need to demonstrate the following skills and experience;

• Experience in a similar sized commercial leadership position
• A forward-thinking approach to managing your property, you’ll be highly visible to both your staff and volunteers and able to share your vision in a clear and compelling way
• You’ll be a natural motivator and coach with an ability to set stretching targets and drive performance, helping your Heads of Department achieve their full potential
• Excellent organisational skills
• Able to focus energy and resources not just on where we can improve the most, but on how we ensure all our supporters feel valued, invested in and care passionately about our work
• Both conservation and commercially minded, you’ll have an understanding of what makes a great visitor experience and will be keen to make sure your high standards are evident across the property
• You’ll need to be a confident communicator, accomplished decision-maker and natural collaborator, adept at building effective working relationships with a wide variety of people including commercial partners, tenants, and National Trust consultancy colleagues
• You will be comfortable managing operational risk, understand the underpinning need for compliance and know what it means to hold others to account
