This is a unique opportunity for you to work at the world famous ancient temple, one of the wonders of the world, and the best known prehistoric monument in Europe.

Providing a warm welcome to a diverse range of visitors to this historic site, you will be ensuring they have relevant information for their visit and about the wider local environment. No two days are the same and keeping the site looking its best is essential to ensuring our visitors leave having had a great experience.

As a confident communicator, you will be comfortable building rapport with customers and using your skills in sales to provide exceptional service at all times.

What you’ll achieve with us

As a Historic Properties Steward at Stonehenge, you’ll help us maintain excellent standards of customer service, optimise all opportunities to generate income and ensure that the site and its assets are safe and secure.

What you’ll be doing as part of the team

Customer Service

1. To provide a consistent excellent service to our visitors that ensures their expectations are exceeded, and respond courteously and appropriately to visitor enquiries and feedback.

2. To maintain excellent standards of site and personal presentation at all times as defined in the Historic Properties Pocket Guide, from providing a warm welcome to visitors, to site presentation including but not limited to general cleaning of all public areas including toilet cleaning and emptying of waste bins.

3. To provide guided tours of the site and ensure, where applicable, tour equipment is accounted for and kept in proper working order.

Commercial Awareness

1. To welcome visitors on arrival and offer them membership, gift aid, a guide book and general information about the site.

2. Understand the commercial objectives of the charity and strive to exceed the property key performance indicators (KPIs)

3. To assist with the set-up, stewarding and break-down of events, including hospitality events where applicable, in liaison with other colleagues.


1. To work cooperatively and collaboratively in a high performing team to meet the needs of the charity and show initiative and take on additional responsibility when required.

2. To improve own role and strengthen job knowledge through undertaking training courses and attending conferences that are considered necessary as a result of the Performance Development Review process.

3. To work Bank Holidays and weekends as required and assist at other sites within reasonable travelling distance on occasion.

Statutory Compliance

1. To undertake property Prime checks and respond to health and safety issues, including dealing with emergency contract callouts eg maintenance, ensuring that the property complies with Health and Safety legislation.

2. To follow set processes to ensure the site is secure at all times and to use personal protection equipment as provided and directed by your manager.

3. To adhere to all financial procedures to include till operation and banking and safeguarding of monies: to implement amendments to standard procedure as instructions may dictate.

Occasionally we may need to review a job description to incorporate any changes or other duties needed for the role as identified by the line manager.

Required Skills:
Demonstrable understanding of the principles of excellent customer care and visitor service

Experience of working as part of a team

General awareness of health and safety and security issues

Sales skills

Good writing and numeracy skills

IT skills for use of PC and other technologies on site

Excellent interpersonal skills to build and maintain good customer and staff relations

Able to work with a diverse range of visitors, volunteers and colleagues

Able to use initiative to overcome practical issues

Able to follow processes and procedures

Able to make a positive contribution to the team’s success

Neat and tidy personal appearance in line with uniform guidance

Reliable and punctual

The role requires standing and / or working outdoors for long periods as is necessary.

Ability to access all public areas of the property, which may include stairwells, confined spaces, heights or places with low lighting.

The role entails reasonable lifting of heavy / bulky objects within published health and safety guidelines on manual handling.
