Job Description:

Location: Worsbrough Mill, Barnsley, South Yorkshire
Status of Employment: Permanent
This position has the option to rent the mill flat and live on site.

Could you be our next 21st century miller?

We’re launching a national search for a 21st century miller to continue an ancient tradition at Worsbrough Mill & Country Park in Barnsley, South Yorkshire.

This is a unique opportunity to run one of around 40 working mills in the country and to join around 300 traditional millers who mill flour on horizontal millstones.

You will play a key role in growing the flour business at Worsbrough Mill, demonstrating your passion and enthusiasm for baking and bread to valued trade customers such as artisan bakers.

You will be responsible for milling flour to produce a range of highly-respected organic flours which are sent from the mill every day to local bakeries, shops and private customers. You will deal with the general public in the mill shop, promote the flour to existing and potential customers and be able to talk knowledgeably about the flour and its baking properties.

Training will be provided to help you develop the skills to mill flour and maintain the mill machinery. However, you will need to demonstrate an aptitude and ability to work with machinery, deal with customers and learn the skills to understand how the flour is used in baking bread and other flour-based products.

The job combines practical skills, craftsmanship, green energy, culinary skills, customer service and business development. The power of the mill will be at your fingertips - from the water, gears and energy, to the millstones themselves, bringing them into harmony to create flour.

Restored as a working museum in 1976, Worsbrough Mill has been nurtured as a successful flour milling business, milling a range of premium quality grains sourced from organic farms in the UK. You will join an illustrious lineage of millers dating back to around 1625, drawing energy from the River Dove which flows through the Low Valley in Barnsley.

Worsbrough Mill & Country Park is a stunning part of Barnsley’s industrial heritage, covering over 62 hectares of woodland and open water reservoir. In 2017 it attracted over 180,000 visitors. You will be instrumental in helping secure the mill’s long-term future as a first-class centre of learning, recreation and locally-produced artisan food. You will be at the very heart of our development plans to ensure the mill becomes a destination of choice for the local community and for visitors to the region.

This is a fantastic opportunity to live and work in Barnsley which is steeped in history and has some beautiful scenery and hidden treasures to explore. You will also have the option to rent a two-bedroom cottage on site.
