Job Title:     Collections and Interpretation Officer
Organisation:     Almond Valley Heritage Trust
Salary:     £25,000 p.a.
Type:     Full-Time Position
Location:     Livingston, Scotland
Closing Date:     Sunday, July 22nd, 2018
Job Ref No:
Job Description:
We’re seeking an imaginative museum professional who will combine responsibility for the care of a nationally-recognised museum collection with the delights of sharing a fascinating local heritage with families and young children.

Almond Valley holds a Recognised museum collection and substantial archive from Scotland’s shale oil industry, which are subject of an ambitious ongoing digitisation programme. These specialist resources, and the knowledge associated with them, are shared on-line through our website, and through other activities that serve specialist interests.

Almond Valley also offers a “wonderful day of adventure and play” that is enjoyed by over 120,000 families and children each year. Families visit to meet farm animals, enjoy imaginative play, and spend time together in lovely surroundings. Our aim is that they also share experiences that offer insight into our heritage and environment, and be inspired to find out more.

We’re a small team in which we all need to turn our hands to many things. The Collections and Interpretation Officer will have the skills, qualities, and attention to detail of a good curator, and will devote time to the care and management of the collection. The larger part of the role will however focus on activities that bring history and learning to life for younger children and their families. These may include the creation of displays, signage, trails, events, activities and games related to the collection, the historic features of the site, or the wider heritage that they represent. All would blend seamlessly into the enjoyment of a great family day out.
Required Skills:
Essential qualities are:

• A relevant museum or heritage qualification at degree level or above
• Curatorial and collections experience
• Insight into the processes of learning
• A talent for plain language, and ability to express complex ideas in simple terms
• Creativity, playfulness, and problem-solving skills
• Affinity with young children and families
• Good digital skills

Desirable qualities include:

• Interest and insight into industrial or social history
• Practical craft and graphic skills
