The Royal Air Force Museum is Britain’s National Museum that tells the story of the RAF through its people and collections. It has three sites (London, Cosford and Stafford) and a trading company which supplements its funding which comes principally from the Ministry of Defence.

This post represents a fantastic opportunity to join the RAF Museum during the RAF’s Centenary year. The Historian will play a key role in developing and delivering the Museum’s Academic Research Strategy which will involve building on the Museum’s established Research Programme. The post-holder will be an active member of the Archive, Library and Research Team.

Duties will include the undertaking of original research and developing a strong academic profile through publication and conference attendance. The Historian will support the Museum’s Research Board and develop relationships with external stakeholders linked to academic research. They will also support RAF Museum colleagues in undertaking research and work in cross-departmental teams to develop the Museum’s public programmes.

The right candidate will possess a PhD qualification (or be in the process of studying for this) in Modern History (not excluding War Studies, Air Power History and related fields), ideally in an aviation-related subject. They will also possess an excellent knowledge of the RAF. They will have strong interpersonal skills and be experienced in working within a team. Experience of undertaking media interviews will be an advantage.

The post will be based in Colindale, NW London. Travel between the Museum’s sites and other venues in the UK and abroad may be required from time to time. There is a requirement to work weekends, evenings and some bank holidays as necessary. A clean driving license will also be useful.
