Job Description:
The Library is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, experienced and motivated Library & Information Assistant on a fixed term contract to join our small Library Services team. You will be based at the National Museum of Scotland with very occasional travel to other sites where the Library has collections.

The successful candidate will be joining the Library’s Serials and Special collections section. Duties include recording the receipt of our current journals in the Library Management System, claiming missing issues and ensuring that our journal runs are complete and accessible for readers including maintaining circulation lists and the alert service for e-resources.
In addition, you will be involved in checking, handling and caring for our rare books and archives, participating in the creation or updating of our finding aids to facilitate access to the Library's archives and providing basic conservation for fragile items.
Required Skills:
Educated to good general standard, you should have good interpersonal skills combined with previous library experience, working with a wide range of readers. You will have excellent customer service skills and an attention to detail and accuracy.

Experience in handling enquiries both in person and remotely is essential as the appointee will operate the Research Library enquiry desk on a rota basis. You will provide information to external users and members of staff on Library resources and Museum collections and procedures, re-directing enquirers to the appropriate department when required. The Library collects print and electronic resources, making them available to both Museum staff and external users - students, academics, private researchers and members of the public. You will be expected to maintain a high level of customer service, using your enthusiasm, your positivity and your customer service skills to deliver an exceptional library service to our readers. The post-holder will provide end-user training, including induction tours of the Library.

Other essentials include a knowledge of classification systems to be able to participate in our collections management operations – re-shelving, shelf-checking, stock audits and general tidying of the collections.
