Salary:     £25,000 - 27,000 p.a.
Type:     Full-Time Position
Location:     Swindon, England
Closing Date:     Sunday, January 27th, 2019
Job Ref No:     SMG00894

Job Description:
Do you have practical experience of 3D object remedial conservation treatment? Have you managed teams of staff and delivered large projects?

As the largest and most ambitious programme the Science Museum Group has undertaken in recent times, One Collection will transform how we care for, access and share our internationally significant collection with the world.

Over the next five years we will study, photograph and transport 35,000 large objects across the National Collections Centre in Wiltshire to a new purpose-built collection management facility being built on site. This new facility will house over 80% of the Science Museum Group Collection, including 320,000 objects from Blythe House in West London, and from 2023 will open regularly through a varied programme of public tours, school and research visits.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Senior Conservator to manage Conservator(s) and work alongside the Project Team to pack and move the collection. Working with our policies and protocols, you will be conserving items in the collection and ensuring they are safe for handling and moving. You will also be responsible for the conservation of objects unpacked from Blythe House.

You will be involved in all aspects of planning and completing conservation treatments. You will also manage three key areas of the project: the preventive conservation cleaning, interventive conservation and hazard surveying. You will provide recommendations on packing and transport options. You will ensure your team is working safely themselves and with other colleagues and is keeping the collection safe throughout the packing and move. During the first two months you will also collaborate on the development of the workflows for preventive conservation, interventive conservation and hazard management.

You will be offered excellent benefits, including 25 days annual leave in addition to bank holidays, a contributory pension scheme, BUPA medical and dental care, an annual season ticket loan and numerous staff discounts whilst developing your career in a world class museum group.
