Salary:     £16,497 p.a.
Type:     Full-Time Position
Location:     Petersfield, West Sussex, England
Closing Date:     Sunday, January 27th, 2019
Job Ref No:     IRC73862
Job Description:
Conservation Assistant
Permanent f/t (37.5 hrs pw)

We protect everything from bats to buildings to beaches – and we want to share them with everyone too. But how do we care for our special places, while helping everyone to enjoy them and their fascinating stories? It’s no small task. In fact, it’s a big team effort and it’s why our Conservation Assistants are so important.

What it's like to work here
Perched on its vantage point high on the South Downs ridge, Uppark commands views as far south as the English Channel. Outside, the intimate gardens are being gradually restored to their original 18th-century design, with plenty of space in the adjacent meadow to play and relax with a picnic. The nearby woodland is great for exploring and den-building.

Situated in the East Pavilion, and the site of the old orangery, our café offers great food with stunning views across the South Downs. In the summer our visitors can take a seat outside and, on a clear day, see as far as the Isle of Wight.

What you'll be doing
As a Conservation Assistant at Uppark, you’ll be working with a great team in an incredible place. You’ll be responsible for the daily opening of our mansion, preparing our house ready for our visitors as well as closing and securing it at the end of each day.

You’ll support the operational running of the house by helping to run the house every Wednesday, giving morning briefings to these volunteers and ensuring that everything is running smoothly. You’ll maintain high standards of customer care throughout the day and lead by example at all times.

No detail will go unnoticed, and you’ll keep a keen eye on everything from the environmental conditions in a room, to signs of wear and tear. You will help with the day-to-day cleaning routines to help us present and conserve Uppark to the highest standard.

In this visitor facing role, we’d love you to talk to visitors about the work you’re doing, and the collections we have as well as leading conservation events. You'll also be part of the wider team of employees and volunteers, helping to cover where necessary.

Working pattern for this role is Tuesday to Saturday.

Please also read the full role profile on our website.

Who we're looking for
We'd love to hear from you if you have;

• A keen interest in history, historic properties and conservation of their collections
• Previous experience as a Trainee Conservation Assistant or equivalent
• A good understanding of preventive conservation
• Knowledge of the approach required when working with fragile historic collections as well as Health & Safety and emergency procedures
• Good manual dexterity and eye-to-hand skills and ability to work from ladders and tower scaffold
• The ability to support volunteers to perform at their best
• Good interpersonal and communication skills, and are a great team player
• A willingness to undertake continuing professional development and personal skills development and have an enthusiasm to learn
