Job Description:
Interim Deputy Registrar
Fixed Term Contract, 9 months with possible extension to 12 months

The Natural History Museum is one of the world’s leading museums, internationally recognised for its dual role as a centre of excellence in scientific research and as a leader in the presentation of natural history through exhibitions, public programmes, publications and the web.

Sitting within the Science Directorate which is responsible for the policy, planning and management of Museum science, our Registry ensures that our collections are made and used appropriately. With a collection of over 80 million items covering books, art works, botany, entomology, zoology, mineralogy and palaeontology and an ambitious exhibition programme both at the NHM and internationally, there are always new challenges and new things to learn.

As Deputy Registrar, you will have primary responsibility for exhibition loans coming in to and going out of the Museum. Working closely with other colleagues in Science as well as in the Central Project Office, Interpretation and Touring Exhibitions, you will ensure exhibition objects are dealt with to the standards set by the Museum's policies and procedures. Whilst you will be primarily responsible for exhibition loans, you will also require an understanding of what is going on elsewhere in the Registry and have a good understanding of Collections Policy & Procedures, so to provide support or advice to teams across the Museum and particularly Science Group.
Required Skills:
The successful candidate will have a degree or relevant experience in a natural history subject or within the fine art, museum studies, museum conservation sphere. You will be able to demonstrable experience of managing outgoing exhibition loans, including negotiating contracts, checking facility reports, advising on conditions, organising transportation and insurance or indemnity. Clear, effective communications skills will be key in this role, to be able to successfully collaborate museum wide as needed.
