Job Description:
Fabric Support Officer
C. £30,379, Temporary (fixed-term contract)
Location: 24 Brooklands Avenue, Cambridge, CB2 8BU

As the public body that champions England`s historic environment, we help people understand, value and care for a diverse range of cultural records from the stone-age to the contemporary. Join us and be a part of an exciting Pilot project focussed on delivering and evaluating the maintenance and community engagement of listed places of worship. This is both a practical project to help those who care for places of worship, and a research project that will provide evidence to inform how resources are focussed in the future.

This Pilot project follows recommendations in the Taylor Review to test approaches to the maintenance, repair and community engagement of listed places of worship in two areas - Manchester and Suffolk. We are working closely with DCMS to deliver and evaluate the impact of a series of community engagement initiatives focussed on the maintenance and conservation advice, plus a minor repairs fund.

As Fabric Support Officer you will provide practical advice to people responsible for listed places of worship, building their confidence in dealing with historic fabric with limited resources. You will help them develop achievable maintenance plans and identify essential urgent repairs, working closely with the rest of the project team and colleagues in Historic England to enable appropriate access to the Minor Repairs Grant Fund. This role will require travel and some out of hours working.

To be successful in this role you will have experience in conservation practice, assessing sites and the maintenance and repair needs of historic fabric. You will be competent in working on multiple projects at once and developing effective working relationships. You will have an understanding of the issues faced by those who care for places of worship and the regulations of works impacting them. With enthusiasm and passion for the historic environment, you will be committed to the success of this project.

This is a great opportunity to work with a dynamic project team and contribute actively to delivering direct support to specific listed places of worship and their communities. At the same time you will be contributing to a wider research programme that may have national impact in the future. We also offer a wide benefits package including a competitive pension scheme, 28 days holiday, corporate discounts, free entry into English Heritage sites as well as the flexibility in your working day that creates a strong work-life balance.

This is a fixed term contract until 30th June 2020. Secondments may be considered subject to certain criteria being met, please contact the HR team to discuss this further.
