Job Title:     African Collections Researcher
Organisation:     The Horniman Museum & Gardens
Salary:     £15,600 - 15,918 p.a.
Type:     Part-Time Position (17.5)
 Contract: 12 months
Location:     London, England
Closing Date:     Tuesday, August 27th, 2019
Job Ref No:     CPE9.19

Job Description:
The Horniman Museum and Gardens is London’s only museum where human cultures and natural environments can be seen alongside each other; a ‘one world’ museum where interconnecting global social and environmental issues can be understood and addressed. As well as internationally important collections of musical instruments, anthropology and natural history, we have an acclaimed aquarium and popular programme of performances and exhibitions, all set in 16 acres of beautiful Gardens offering breath-taking views across London. We are visited by over 900,000 people each year.

We, together with the Pitt Rivers in Oxford, the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Cambridge, and World Museum Liverpool have been awarded funding for the project ‘Re-thinking practice and building trust around African collections’. It will engage with colleagues Kenya and Nigeria, and with African diaspora communities in the UK, to explore how to think about the future curation of African collections in our institutions, and our future relations with African institutions.

We are looking for a part-time project researcher for 12 months, who will shape the project and lead research on collections from Kenya and Nigeria across the four museums. You will have the opportunity to travel to Nigeria and Kenya to build relationships and seek advice about the project and its approach. You will also help develop conversations with individuals and organisations representing Kenyan and Nigerian diaspora communities in the UK about the project, and undertake some project management duties including the organisation of workshops and writing of project reports.
Required Skills:
We are looking for someone who is concerned about colonial histories and their legacies in and outside Britain, and engaged in critical conversations about how colonialism is represented by and acted on in public institutions. You will have experience in collections and archival research, and an interest in developing approaches that promote respect and equitable relationships with external organisations and individuals. You’ll be passionate about, and have experience in, coordinating public conversations. Existing personal or professional networks with Nigerian and/or Kenyan diaspora communities in the UK would be an advantage.
