Job Description:
We are looking for someone with strong and effective leadership skills who has a high level of knowledge and understanding regarding the cultural heritage sector to become Head of Collections & Applied Conservation.

You will lead on the management of collections associated with the Properties in Care of Scottish Ministers and the specialist HES Conservator team. We pride ourselves in having a high percentage of our collections on display within the communities we serve and managing the challenges this can bring. Our collections bring our properties to life and are an integral part of our visitor offer.

As a head of service and senior manager, you will be expected to lead our work in this area and deliver our Corporate Plan objectives. You will manage a highly capable team of professional and dedicated staff. You will manage the department’s resources, capabilities and capacity; to play a full role in all aspects of the business and management of the Conservation Directorate and to provide advice to members of the HES Senior Management Team and HES Board.

Overview of the post and information about the team
The Collections and Applied Conservation teams are being brought together at this time in recognition of their synergies and to increase our focus in these areas of operation. The Collections and Applied Conservation teams are two small, professional teams within Historic Environment Scotland’s Conservation Directorate.

The Collections team, based in the HES headquarters at Longmore House, is responsible for the care and management of, and access to, a large, widely dispersed collection of c. 40,000 historic objects held by HES on behalf of Scottish Ministers and institutional lenders at over 166 Properties in Care across Scotland.

The Applied Conservation team operates from our conservation facility on the west side of Edinburgh at South Gyle containing workshops and office accommodation. Our stone and painted surfaces conservators provide specialist advice and hands on conservation work to properties and collections. They work across Scotland and in close collaboration with our Estates Conservation teams and our science and digital teams based at the Engine Shed in Stirling.

Close ties with HES Archives are expected to provide a consistent corporate approach in both areas.

The key responsibilities, duties and objectives of your role include, but are not limited to: the development of a new team; risks/compliance; financial management; project management and planning; stakeholder/partnership engagement.
