Photographic Collections Cataloguing Volunteer

Purpose: To assist the Department of Collections Development and Review staff with cataloguing photograph collections

Responsible to: Senior Curator, Department of Collections Development and Review

1 day per week. Normal working hours would be Tuesdays, 10am-4:30pm (negotiable).
Starting January 2020.

Location: National Army Museum, Stevenage.
Some travel to the Museum in Chelsea may be involved occasionally.

• Supporting the Museum’s collections development and review projects focusing on on the cataloguing and digitisation of photographs, which will feed into exhibitions administration and collections management tasks.
• Cataloguing of photographs recently acquired by the Museum, including those from the Grenadier Guards archives
• Researching material in the NAM’s collections for use in projects
• Inputting data into the Collections Management System
• Improving long-term storage of NAM’s collections of photograph albums including repackaging

The role would suit someone who:

• has a good general standard of written and spoken English literacy and numeracy
• is able to work independently and as part of a team
• is methodical with very good attention to detail
• has excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• has good ICT skills (word-processing, database and spreadsheet applications)
• has an interest in British military history

Support & Training
• In-house training will be provided that is specific to the role, which will include site induction; Health and Safety; Equality & Diversity; object handling; and specific computer applications as required
• Expenses: reasonable out of pocket travel expenses to and from the Museum, and reimbursement for a sandwich lunch
• Volunteers' Handbook and regular feedback meetings with designated supervisor

• Become part of a friendly and dedicated team.
• Gain practical knowledge of collections cataloguing and management within a UK national museum.
• Contribute to the longterm preservation of the nation’s heritage.
