Job Description:
Do you have a passion for collections and bringing the stories they hold to life? This is an exciting time to join our Museum Service as major developments of our museums are changing the cultural landscape of Colchester and Ipswich.

Colchester Museums have been awarded a 'Designation Development' grant of £82,500 from Arts Council England (ACE) to explore its nationally important early Roman cremation burials, in partnership with the University of Reading and Colchester Archaeological Trust. This funding will support scientific analysis, helping to decode and shed light on the lives and deaths of the early Roman and indigenous peoples of Camulodunum.
Required Skills:
We are seeking an Assistant Collections & Learning Curator to support the research, engagement and learning outcomes of the project. The role offers an exciting opportunity for those with a specialism in Roman archaeology and an interest in developing curatorial skills. As part of the Decoding the Dead project team you will support a wide array of activities including: undertaking a literature review of the Roman archaeology of death and burial, creating and updating digital records relating to the Museums’ antiquarian Roman collections, assisting in the development of a Mass Open Online Course (in partnership with the University of Reading) and co-developing an exhibition and learning resources that disseminate the results of the project to a public audience. The role will involve working closely with project partners, especially the University of Reading, who will be undertaking the scientific analysis and interpretation of the cremated remains. An excellent researcher and communicator, you’ll enjoy working with and supporting dynamic colleagues in our busy and aspirational museum service.
