Job Description:
Conservator - 6 Months fixed term, 35 hours per week
London Metropolitan Archives
£35,090 - £39,680 pa. including Inner London Weighting

London Metropolitan Archives is pleased to be working with Coram, the UK’s oldest children’s charity, which has received a grant of £1.26 million from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to enable the digitisation of a major portion of its Foundling Hospital archive dating back to its foundation in 1739 and detailing the lives of 25,000 children in its care. Coram’s four-year project, Voices Through Time: The Story of Care, will secure access to fragile and vulnerable items in the archive held by London Metropolitan Archives (LMA) including Petition Letters from mothers seeking entry for their children and the Billet Books containing fabric tokens they left with their children. Many of these are currently unfit for consultation. The project aims to digitise over 110,000 pages of documents which will be transcribed with the support of a global community of volunteers and made accessible on the Coram Story website along with stories and content from the projects created by care-experienced young people, and an online interactive timeline of care. The project is due to be completed in the Autumn of 2023.

As part of the project this fixed term 6 months post will focus on preparing a series of bound letters for digitisation. The appointed conservator will pull down the volumes to release the individual documents, undertake paper repair to ensure the letters can be safely handled, consolidate seals which require attention, and rehouse the bundles and the covers.

Applicants will have a recognised qualification in the fields of paper, archive or book conservation or equivalent with PACR accreditation from the Institute of Conservation or a commitment to gain accreditation. Experience of working in an archive would be an advantage.

The post holder will work to the Conservation Studio Manager.
