Job Description:
This is a fixed-term post for an experienced Curator with a specialisation in late-modern period material culture, the decorative arts or cultural heritage. The postholder will be providing cover for the co-curator of a major exhibition on court culture and fashion at Kensington Palace (2021), as well as managing new displays at Kew Palace and representing the curators’ team on collections. You will be working with items from Historic Royal Palaces and the Royal Collection as well as lenders. This position presents an exciting opportunity for a talented, experienced, and creative individual.

You will help lead on researching and understanding the palaces and their collections, and you will also help to champion an understanding of history in the presentation of the palaces today.

Key responsibilities of the role include preparing and delivering exhibition and display content, and writing material for our visitors and wider audiences. You will need to engage in public speaking events, and use your aptitude for social media to communicate HRP’s stories to the wider world. The post is part of Historic Royal Palaces’ Curators Team and will involve close cooperation with specialist colleagues across HRP as well as external lenders and other contacts.
Required Skills:
You will have demonstrable experience of working in a heritage environment, and ideally have expertise in material culture within the range of the 17th to 19th centuries. Post-graduate qualifications in a relevant discipline (art, design history or history) and proven experience working within museums are both essential. In addition, you will have an understanding of best practice in collections management and exhibitions.

Equally importantly, you will love history, and communicating your enthusiasm for the subject to a wide range of audiences. You will demonstrate proven ability to work flexibly within a team, sometimes under pressure, and be confident in persuading and negotiating to reach your objectives.
