Job Title:    Senior Project Manager
Organisation:    Vancouver Art Gallery
Salary:
Type:    Full-Time Position
Location:    Vancouver, BC, British Columbia
Closing Date:    Open until Position Filled
Job Ref No:    08678

Job Description:
This is one of the most exciting and important cultural building projects happening anywhere in the world. The Vancouver Art Gallery has just reached agreement for a new 2-acre site in downtown Vancouver on which to construct an innovative purpose-built Gallery, which will be a Vancouver masterpiece of design, sustainability and operational excellence. An international architect selection process is under way, and building design work will begin in 2014, with commissioning and move-in scheduled for 2019.

Preliminary plans call for a building of 311,000 sq. ft., comprising 86,500 sq. ft. of exhibition space, plus education, retail, and collections management space. This is more than double the size of the existing Gallery, and includes new amenities that will dramatically expand public access, community use and future exhibition partnerships.

The Senior Project Manager will report to the Director and assume the leadership role in bringing the new building project through all stages of design and development, approval, construction, and commissioning. The position will manage cross-functional teams consisting of external and internal resources, and will represent the project to a wide variety of external stakeholders. While it has a technical component, above all this is a broad senior management role requiring exceptional interpersonal, relationship-building, and business skills.

Required Skills:
Candidates should have a minimum of 10 years of recent project management experience in a leadership capacity, with a track record of successfully completing large, complex projects. Ideally this will include experience with art museum planning and project implementation, providing a good understanding of exhibition and operational requirements. The ability to establish cooperative and effective working relationships with a variety of representatives of specialized designers, technical trades and contractors, and Gallery staff will be critical. The successful candidate will become an integral part of the Gallery’s senior management team.

This is a very special opportunity to be a key part of creating a legacy project that will be enjoyed by multiple constituencies and generations. It will expand Vancouver’s “cultural capital” to further enhance its reputation as one of the world’s most sustainable and liveable cities.
