Job Description: |
The British Museum
Curator: Asia Collections (Indonesian speciality preferred)
Asia
Full-time
Permanent
£26,820 per annum
Ref: 1351652
Founded in 1753, the British Museum’s remarkable collection spans two millennia of human history. Visitors can visit the world and experience the collections from Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe - both the ancient and contemporary worlds, including iconic objects such as the Rosetta Stone, sculptures from Amaravati, the Parthenon sculptures, and Egyptian mummies.
The Department of Asia is looking for a Curator specialising in collections from throughout Asia but with a strong focus on the material culture of Indonesia. You should have a specialisation in working with collections gathered over at least the last two centuries through ethnographic fieldwork and expeditions. You will also be expected to conduct research, including anthropological fieldwork. Further, you will be responsible for the curation, development, presentation and publication of the collections within your geographic/cultural specialisation and will be required to contribute to the curation of all the collections acquired from the Museum’s past ethnographic fieldwork from South, Southeast, and East Asia, as well as from Mongolia and Siberia. For some of these areas, work will need to be carried out in close collaboration with other curators in the Museum.
You will undertake collections-based documentation, including cataloguing and conduct research that will lead to lectures, publications and exhibitions. You will also work closely with internal stakeholders to propose acquisitions, possibly including properly documented materials from your own fieldwork and you will engage in museum-wide programmes, such as exhibitions and cross–departmental initiatives.
A key part of the role in the initial years will be geared toward the project the Museum is undertaking with the opening in 2014 of an adjacent building, the World Conservation and Exhibition Centre, which has new collection storerooms. You will be asked to plan and contribute to the management of the move of the Department of Asia collections from their current off-site storerooms and work with others to plan the layout of the collections in the new facility.

| Required Skills: |
| You will be educated to degree level or equivalent in Anthropology or an appropriate subject. You will ideally have previous field work experience in Asia, especially Indonesia, and experience cataloguing, displaying, and curating museum collections. You will have language skills appropriate for research on Asian subjects. You will be able to produce work of interest to both academic and public audiences. You will be an excellent team player with good verbal and written communication skills and will have published (or is progressing toward publication) of academic work in anthropology, or in the study of ethnographically assembled fieldwork collections. |
