|The Lloyd’s Register Foundation, Heritage & Education Centre (HEC) is a public-facing library and archive holding material concerning over 250 years of marine and engineering science and history. The Centre is a part of the Lloyd’s Register Foundation and is focused on enhancing public education and research in a number of areas, from maritime history to STEM disciplines.
The Centre are also the custodians of Lloyd’s Register’s vast archive. With materials dating back to the 1830s, the archive holds over 1.25 million ship plans and survey reports, the historic photograph collection, Lloyd’s Register corporate history documents and much more.
The diversity of the Centre’s library and archive offer an invaluable resource to researchers from a variety of disciplines, including maritime, business, engineering, genealogy and linguistics.
The purpose of this role is to support the Archivist with cataloguing part of the Lloyd’s Register Foundation’s archive to ISAD(G) standards. The candidate will also help with the day to day running and care of the archive, under the guidance of the Archivist. Working closely with the Education & Outreach Coordinator, the successful candidate will also help with public access and engagement of the archive including answering enquiries and education and outreach projects.
Work flexibly and efficiently to catalogue archive material to ISAD(G) standards using Excel and a purpose-built Collections Management System.
Assist in the Quality Assurance of catalogued material for the Ship Plan and Survey Report Collection (SPSRC), referring data errors to the Archivist.
Ability to work with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, answer enquiries when required and facilitate access to LRF archival holdings.
Conduct research around archival material to support education and outreach activities
Participate in education and outreach projects including podcast recordings, webinars, online exhibitions, stories, grants and others that may arise.
Support Education & Outreach Coordinator and Digital Engagement Manager in producing policies and flowcharts for the Centre’s Document Management System.
Follow key internal policies to assist with the running of the archive and Centre
Assess the risks and work in a safe manner at all times, robustly implementing health and safety rules, instructions and systems and refuse to undertake work that compromises your safety or health
Be willing to undertake other ad hoc tasks as and when required to support the wider HEC team
|Applicants should have a relevant degree in history or similar|
Experience of cataloguing in a professional museum/archive environment using Excel and/or a purpose-built Collections Management System is desirable
Understanding of archival cataloguing standards in the UK
Demonstrates a high level of understanding of archives and the heritage industry, as well as awareness of current issues
Experience and/or training in the handling of historic records and/or artefacts in a heritage setting
Demonstrable customer service/public facing experience
Good communication skills and the ability to interact with a wider range of users
Excellent research and writing skills with attention to detail and accuracy
An interest in maritime history would be beneficial but not necessary
