Job Description |
|
Wellcome is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.
We plan to spend 16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate.
These challenges need the bold science we support, but they won’t be solved by science alone.
Wellcome Collection is a free museum and library that aims to challenge how we all think and feel about health. Through exhibitions, collections, live programming, digital, broadcast and publishing, we create opportunities for people to think deeply about the links between science, medicine, life and art.
Where in Wellcome will I be working?
Wellcome’s Conservation and Collection Care team work across the organisation to design and implement an inspiring programme of works, conserving items for exhibition, loan, digitisation, and research; and caring for the collection through dynamic storage.
We’re looking for a Conservator with an object specialism who will be work within the predominantly paper studio to broaden the skill base. In this role you will work closely with colleagues from our Collections and Research, Public Programme and Operation teams to maximise the impact of the department.
You will be a pragmatic, detail-oriented conservator, with strong experience of delivering high quality work in a cultural setting, working to project milestones and being part of a small but perfectly formed team.
What will I be doing?
This role is an important part of the Conservation and Collection Care team, who deliver a diverse programme of preventive and interventive work, with a varied portfolio of onsite and offsite storage.
As Conservator you will;
• Deliver innovative conservation on the wide-ranging materials and formats in the Wellcome Collection, to successfully realise departmental objectives, sustainability initiatives and the diverse voices of the collection.
• Support the Collection Storage Strategy and initiate prioritised conservation, object moves and rehousing programmes.
• Act as a liaison with Exhibition colleagues on all object-based displays, including the decant of Medicine Man and delivery of The Collection Gallery.
• Take part in Collections Development meetings to provide specialist advice on acquisition; undertake surveys of material and triage for safe handling and stabilisation.
• Implement the Collection Emergency Plan by being a salvage team member and training wider colleagues.
• Shape the programme of external contractors and freelancers by identifying the need, scoping, and overseeing their work.
We are looking for someone with:
• A recognised qualification in object conservation or proven equivalent experience in a heritage setting.
• Experience of delivering successful time-bound conservation that delivers significant added value
• Excellent manual handling skills
• Strong ability to communicate and translate their work to a diverse range of stakeholders
• Collaborative approach to problem solving, but with ability to make and articulate decisions when required |
