Job Description |
|
Wellcome Collection is a free museum and library exploring health and human experience, where you can enjoy exhibitions, museum and library collections, public events, and a vibrant shop and café. We also publish books and online stories.
This is a great time to join Wellcome Collection as we embed our ambitious 10-year strategy to create a world where everyone’s experience of health matters.
Wellcome Collection is part of the Wellcome Trust, a global charitable foundation that supports science to build a healthier future for everyone. Wellcome Trust plans to spend 16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.
Your part in this will be to ensure our digital products, user experience and technical infrastructure facilitate the widest possible access to our collections, stories, digital content and visitor information.
This is a wide-reaching and dynamic management role that will see you working across disciplines and teams including Experience Design, User Research, Product Design, Software Engineering, Collections Information, Digital Content and Digital Production amongst others to establish a clear strategic direction for our Data and Digital offer that aligns closely with both the One Wellcome and Wellcome Collection strategies.
We are looking for a Head, Digital Experience & Insights to join our team on a permanent basis.
Where in Wellcome will I be working?
You will be heading up Wellcome Collection’s Digital Product team; an experienced multi-disciplinary team of three covering user experience, design, technical management, and data analysis. You will also be working in a matrix-management system with Digital Editorial, Software Engineering, Experience Design and Collections Information. The team works within the main Wellcome building across the dedicated Wellcome Collection and Digital & Technology spaces. The team reports into our Collections & Digital department reporting into the Associate Director, Collections & Digital, and will work creatively and collaboratively across both Wellcome Collection and Wellcome Trust on a variety of strategic and operational projects.
What will I be doing?
From the start, you’ll be line-managing a team of 3 direct line reports, and matrix-managing the Wellcome Collection project work of a wider team of 13 digital, technology and data specialists. You will be a member of Wellcome Collection’s management team and will play a crucial role in shaping the future of wellcomecollection.org as a product; the digital accessibility provision available to our users; the accessibility of collections information to internal and external stakeholders; our Collections Management Systems and the strategic approach to digital activity within Wellcome Collection. We are presently undertaking two major capital projects – one relating to our collections management systems, and another relating to our long-term sustainability – that you will play a key role in.
The former of these projects is the Wellcome Collection Systems Transformation Project, which will see the comprehensive product replacement of our collections management infrastructure. The project has appointed delivery partners for the Collections Management System element, and the Library Management System element will shortly follow. The transformation is not solely systems based but reflects a wider ambition to make our handling of collections information more dynamic, accessible and creative. We will also be looking to transform the way we manage our collections themselves, utilising better digital tools and data structures to transform collections movement, accessibility, research and create stronger links between collections and our stakeholders. You will be on the board for this project and able to offer insight and data-driven direction to meet the needs of Wellcome Collection’s users and stakeholders.
As we implement our new strategy for a world where everyone’s experience of health matters, you’ll work with senior colleagues to define the opportunities to enhance the accessibility of our collections, to develop our digital practice to be a leader in the field, and to radically re-think our approach to tools that enable knowledge sharing.
Aside from the work on the Systems Transformation Project, you will be leading the development of a coordinated approach to Wellcome Collection’s digital products, tools and content templates that enhance user experience, increase accessibility, strengthen brand coherence and maximise the reach and impact of our collections information and knowledge that is currently stored across multiple platforms and formats. You will lead the creation of a strategically aligned and visible programme of works that primarily delivers against the Wellcome Collection Strategic Plan, and you will manage the flexible resource and budgets required for delivery.
You will also be balancing the strategic planning that’s required to effectively implement Wellcome Collection’s new strategy with the business-as-usual operations that drive our busy delivery schedule. You will be managing your own team and independently developing strong working relationships across the organisation and beyond.
We are looking for someone who can:
• Provide oversight and joined-up thinking for a dispersed ecosystem of collections knowledge, information and data. You will be able to bring consistency and organization to our approaches and can work collaboratively of gathering user data to inform internal system improvements.
• Operate as a lead product manager to be accountable for a diverse array of products including wellcomecollection.org and our library and collections management systems.
• Work collaboratively and creatively with internal colleagues across collections and digital disciplines while balancing you professional practice with the needs of the people and cultures who are represented in our collections.
• Manage an experienced team of diverse professionals, giving structure to their work in line with our strategy.
• Bring deep product management and/or experience design expertise, with a specialism in one or more of the key following areas: strategic planning and delivery, AI and automation, content design, user data analysis, major project delivery.
• Demonstrate engagement with questions of digital, AI and data ethics and lead the organizational thinking around emerging best practice.
• Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organization and demonstrate a commitment to Accessibility, Diversity and Inclusion principles in both recruitment and practice.
Is this job for me?
We recognize the need for Wellcome Collection to work in partnership, and in dialogue, with as many people as possible in order for our spaces, collections and programme to meaningfully reflect the interests and needs of the global communities Wellcome represents and engages with.
Wellcome Collection is committed to anti-racism and anti-ableism, and we consider digital experience and the ways we collect and work with user, stakeholder and collections data to be central to delivering this approach. You might already be leading a diverse digital, technology, product or experience design department or have taken steps to increase access to your institution’s collections and knowledge. You will have worked closely with the communities your collections represent, and you will be open to creative and challenging collaborations that push your professional practice forward. You will enjoy taking considered risks in your practice and will thrive in an environment in which your strategic thinking is encouraged and supported.
You’ll understand the challenges and opportunities of helping large organisations respond authentically to the communities they serve and be able to switch between strategic and operational activities to help make it happen. If this advert speaks to your practice and you feel excited by the opportunity to work differently in a leading cultural organisation we would love to hear from you.
To apply for this role please submit an updated CV and answer 2 application questions to demonstrate that you meet the minimum requirements for the role.
