  Job Description
The Curator has oversight of the work of the department, and is responsible for academic research, the annual exhibition programme, conservation and forging ambassadorial links in the UK and worldwide. The museum, libraries and archival collections underpin the College’s extensive education work, overseen by the Museum Education Officer who devises lesson plans focusing on the collections in keeping with the curricular needs of pupils and visiting schools.

The Volunteer and Bookings Officer oversees the extensive booking programme and co-ordinates the large group of volunteers who assist with the research and public-facing work of the collections and museum.

The Assistant Curator role will chiefly comprise of cataloguing, image digitisation, registration duties and storage management. The post will answer to the Curator and will work closely with the Education Officer in providing artefacts for teaching, and for curating some displays. It is envisaged that the post will also develop a working relationship with the Volunteer and Bookings Officer in relation to some of the research volunteers, particularly regarding the ongoing re-organisation of the storage areas.

Scope of the Role
• Oversee the routine preservation, and daily administration of material relating to the Collections.
• Manage the registration of the Collections, including loans, insurance and documentation and classification systems on appropriate museum software.
• Maintain all required health and safety documentation, including risk assessments, disaster recovery and salvage plans, in co-operation with the Curator.
• Promote the Collections through displays, exhibitions and lectures, in conjunction with the Curator.
• Work closely with the Museum Education Officer to facilitate the use of the Collections in the College’s educational work.
• Provide advice as required in relation to the professional storage of the Collections.
• Maintain the highest professional standards in relation to monitoring environmental display and storage conditions.
• Work with the Volunteer Liaison Officer to facilitate appropriate volunteer cover for public open days, booked groups and other tours.
• Undertake appropriate academic and exhibitions research into aspects of the Collections, Historic Libraries and Archives.
• Advise and assist Stonyhurst colleagues in the use of the Collections to support their work; educational, extra-curricular, pastoral, development and external relations.
• Appraise potential external donations of material in consultation with the Curator in line with the agreed collecting policy.
• Contribute to a social media plan to publicise the work of the Archives and assist with the maintenance of the Collections website.
• Assist, as part of the team, with the rota of summer/holiday museum openings, occasional evening lectures and the Stonyhurst Scholars Programme.
  Required Skills / Qualifications
Essential skills and attributes
• Educated to at least degree level in a relevant subject.
• Significant experience of Collections Management.
• Excellent IT skills and competence in automated cataloguing.
• The ability to plan for the future and coordinate activities, establish priorities and meet deadlines.
• The capacity to work independently under own initiative, as well as part of a team.

Desirable skills and attributes
• Familiarity with current developments in museum conservation and environmental control.
• Experience in museum photography and the management of a digital image bank.
• Experience with public engagement initiatives and working with school-age children.
• Knowledge of English Catholic history and the Early Modern period.
• Additional relevant research skills.
