Job Description:
Watts Gallery Trust has an exciting vacancy for a Community Learning Officer to work with the Curator (Community Programmes) to deliver the Trust’s community and outreach programme for adults and young people, working collaboratively with the Learning & Public Programmes Department to achieve annual objectives, largely funded by statutory funders, trusts, foundations and individual philanthropy.

Community Programme
Creative Workshops
* Deliver and adapt creative workshops for different adult community groups incorporating the gallery’s collections and themes.
* Deliver Arts Award accredited workshops for youth inclusion groups, booking arts award trained artists to co-deliver activities as required.
* Deliver workshops in a range of settings, including children’s centres, family centres, secure settings, prisons and residential care homes as well as online from Watts Gallery-Artists’ Village and at community events e.g., fairs and cultural festivals.

Creative Projects
* Facilitate workshops between artists and designers with community groups to cocreate products for the Limner Collection.

* Administratively support the delivery of our programme at HMP Send where the women residents make their own work, supported by an artist in residence, for exhibition at HMP Send and at external exhibitions. Their artwork is also reproduced for a range of products for sale.

My Watts
Help the Community Programme Curator facilitate My Watts projects, enabling artists and individuals in the community to produce content about the Watts collections, resulting in exhibited work, articles for the Watts Magazine, trails and online content.

Museum Learning
* Engage audiences with the collections, stories and ideas at Watts Gallery - Artists’ Village in imaginative and inclusive ways.
* Apply best practice in teaching and learning strategies, to ensure everyone has the opportunity to learn, be inspired and to create.
* Evaluate engagement and use outcomes to inform future planning.
* Share engagement stories with participant groups.
* Be collaborative and open to working across arts platforms, choosing the best approach for different cohorts.

Administration and Governance
Programme Development
* Ensure all activities incorporate the art and ideas represented at Watts Gallery - Artists’ Village.
* Work with the Community Programme Curator to recruit freelance artist Creative Collaborators from under-represented backgrounds to co-devise and deliver projects.
* Develop and monitor the effectiveness of bursary and golden ticket schemes.
* Increase opportunities to reflect diverse cultural links between 21st century culture and creativity with the historical art and ideas represented at Watts Gallery - Artists’ Village.
* Work with the Operations Team to ensure intellectual and physical accessibility in all learning programmes.

Communication

* Work with the Community Programme Curator to create content (website, print, social media) and keep this up to date.
* Use shared calendars to ensure awareness of both remote and onsite activities.
* Attend Front of House and weekly Operations meetings to ensure all colleagues have a good awareness of activities taking place.
* Provide clear communication with volunteers, freelancers and other external stakeholders by letter, phone, email, meetings.
* Prepare content for presentations about the Watts Gallery Trust’s programmes for schools, families and young people and deliver presentations as required.

Learning Spaces and Resources
* Ensure learning spaces (virtual, indoor and outdoor) are appropriately set up for different audiences.
* Prepare lists of materials and resources and order at least one month in advance of activities.
* Share responsibility for the upkeep and organisation of the Foyle Pottery Studio and Clore Learning Studio to ensure that the spaces are tidy, clean, organised and well stocked with materials.

Accountability
* Record qualitative and quantitative outcomes from programmes.
* Use centralised systems to keep accurate records of engagement.
* Plan focus groups, advisory groups and other consultations to ensure programmes and new major projects are informed by robust research.
* Collate information required for funding reports.
* Evaluate activities and act on any issues raised in visitor and staff feedback.
* Prepare reports in engaging formats.
* Plan activities within budget.
* Keep accurate records of expenses, orders and invoices.
* Provide monthly reports, supporting the Community Programme Curator with adjusting monthly forecasts.
* Chase up invoices and payments as required.
* Ensure all activities are supported by up-to-date Risk Assessments, DBS checks and that freelancers/volunteers are appropriately briefed and receive contracts.

Other duties:
* Develop knowledge of the collections and upcoming exhibitions.
* Support Learning Team colleagues with the delivery of any workshops and events as necessary and collaborate with and support colleagues in other departments as required.
* Keep abreast of research, policies, guidance and good practice of relevance to museum and gallery learning.
Required Skills:
Skills and Experience

Essential
• Ability to deliver creative workshops in a range of disciplines
• Experience and confidence in working with people with additional needs
• Excellent organisation and planning skills, with the ability to think ahead and anticipate the needs of different people
• Excellent interpersonal skills for effective communication with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.

Desirable
• Experience of working in a museum/gallery
• Experience of working in secure settings e.g., prisons
• Experience of teaching via digital platforms

Knowledge & Qualifications

Essential
• A Fine Art, Craft, Design degree or equivalent
• IT skills – Microsoft 365

Desirable
• A PGCE
• Arts Award trained
