  Job Description
The National Army Museum’s mission is to tell the story of Our Army and the people who have served in it; to inspire, engage and educate, though our World Class Museum and Collections. Through our five permanent galleries, our temporary exhibition spaces and our innovative events programme, the public can explore what it’s like to be a soldier, why we fought in conflicts – past and present, and discover the impact the Army has had on our society.

We are looking for people to join us as part of our journey as an inspiring, vibrant and successful world-class Museum.

Historian - £33,365pa (plus benefits)
(Full-Time, Permanent Appointment - London based)

We are seeking to appoint a Historian to conduct and communicate research into the history and traditions of ‘Our Army’: the land forces of Britain and the former British Empire.

Working as part of the Museum’s research team, the NAM’s Historians carry out and encourage research inspired by the Museum’s collections and archive, collaborating with colleagues and external partners, and communicating their research through a range of outputs including: academic and popular publications, digital content, conference papers, and other public history activities.

This is an opportunity to work within a national heritage institution with significant scope for both public and academic engagement, and unrivalled access to a diverse collection spanning historic documents, objects, art and material culture, as well as close links to Regimental collections and networks across the country.

This role would be particularly suitable for holders of a doctoral qualification in military history or a closely related subject, who wish to develop their experience in the heritage sector and public engagement.

We encourage applications from historians with a background in any aspect of British military history from the Civil Wars to the present day, particularly those with expertise in the Victorian Army and/or the pre-1947 Indian Army.

Applicants who are invited to attend an interview will be required to submit samples of written work, preferably in the form of publications or other formal outputs.

Salary progression possible depending on qualifications.

Interviews will be held on Thursday 15th September 2022.
