We care for more than 80 million objects spanning billions of years and welcome more than five million visitors annually and 16 million visits to our website.

Today the Museum is more relevant and influential than ever. By attracting people from a range of backgrounds to work for us, we can continue to look at the world with fresh eyes and find new ways of doing things.

We employ 900 staff in a variety of roles, all united by our vision of a future where people and planet thrive. We need everyone to have the passion and drive to help us with our mission to create advocates for our planet and inspire millions to care about the natural world.

Diversity and inclusion matter to us.
Our vision is of a future where both people and the planet thrive. Diversity is one of our core values and we strive to build a workplace where everyone feels a sense of belonging. All new staff who join us learn about the importance of diversity and inclusion to the Museum and how to contribute to creating an inclusive environment.

We know we have more to do, but we are committed to ensuring that everyone who works at the Museum feels they can thrive and feel valued and respected.

About the role
Are you a confident communicator, risk aware and driven by a clear vision to respect data privacy rights and protect personal information?

Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, the Natural History Museum is looking for an interim Data Protection Officer to join our Information Management Team for a 14-month fixed term contract as Maternity Cover.

The interim Data Protection Officer will both oversee the work of the Information Management Team and take on the specific role of subject matter expert for data protection, in order to monitor and oversee personal data compliance across the Museum.

The role holder will provide specialist advice and guidance across the Musem whilst also leading on the establishment and maintenance of policy, standards and internal compliance regimes to ensure that the personal data of staff, volunteers, members, donors, customers and other individuals is processed in compliance with data protection regulations and internal best practice.

About you
• You will have a substantial understanding of data protection law and regulatory requirements and experience of how these apply in practice to an organisation such as the Natural History Museum. You will have excellent interpersonal skills to be able to influence behaviour and communicate clearly regardless of organisational position and hierarchy.

• You will have experience of dealing with complex and varied data protection challenges, evidence of dealing effectively with sudden unexpected demands and an ability to take reasoned, risk-based decisions on difficult and contentious issues.

• To thrive in this role, you must be able to work independently and set your own priorities, and you must have experience of assessing privacy risks and working collaboratively with stakeholders to find suitable solutions to meet both business need and compliance requirements.
