Job Description |
|
It’s carefully reviving pieces rich in history
It’s being trusted to deliver. And it’s the satisfaction of caring for irreplaceable historical interiors. This is what makes a career with the Royal Household so different.
The curtains and soft furnishings spanning across our locations are truly diverse, with many unique and historically significant schemes. What’s more, as our buildings are working, many of the items and interiors are in regular use.
Joining our talented upholstery, curtain making and soft furnishings team, you’ll work on a wide range of traditionally made and upholstered curtain, pelmet and soft-furnishing projects.
Key Responsibilities:
• You’ll undertake the production of varied soft furnishing and window dressing schemes, considering latest industry methods, quality standards, design and the timescales needed to ensure beautiful results every time.
• Involved in all aspects of a project, from design schemes and researching historic styles, to sourcing suitable materials and specific construction methods.
• You’ll also work on existing soft furnishings, evaluating and recording the condition, before treating, repairing and conserving items sympathetically. Liaising with colleagues to understand wider operational needs, a key challenge for you will be to balance projects with the busy activities of the working palaces.
• You’ll be encouraged to develop your practical skills on the job, as well as share your expertise with others. You’ll create varied manuals, for example for pelmets and blind construction, to help train future apprentices of the craft.
• And knowing that you're helping to preserve and present the interiors of the Royal residences that can be enjoyed by future generations will continue to drive you.
• Based at our workshop in Windsor, but also working across sites with items in situ, the rich diversity of making new and maintaining existing items will stretch you. |
|
Required Skills / Qualifications |
|
• With essential practical experience in curtain making and soft furnishings, you’ll be confident in working on complex projects through your skilled craftsmanship.
• You’ll have a keen interest in historical furnishings and will be a skilled practical problem solver, able to suggest innovative solutions to restore them back to working condition.
• A meticulous approach will be vital, and your attention to detail means you always achieve the highest standard of finish.
• With excellent time management skills, you’ll be able to prioritise your workload, judge timescales and manage deadlines. And with a flexible approach, you’ll be able to adapt to changing circumstances effectively.
• Beyond this, it’s your ability to work with others that will ensure your success. And with good communication skills, you’ll be confident in liaising with a broad spectrum of colleagues and specialists in their field.
• Above all, your passion for your craft will inspire you to deliver the highest level of care. |
