The Opportunity
IMMA is seeking a visionary Head of Visitor Experience & Security to transform IMMA’s visitor journey - from the moment someone enters our gates to the moment they leave. You will be an experienced leader who will foster a welcoming engagement and ensure our security procedures and fire safety protocols are progressive and efficient, providing a safe and secure environment across the 48-acre site for the public, our staff, exhibits, and the IMMA Collection of Artworks.

This is a time of significant growth at IMMA. You will join a purpose-driven Senior Management Team who are working together to drive the delivery of our ambitious Strategic Plan 2024-2028. You will work with colleagues to support the activation of the whole site, inside and out, playing an integral role in shaping how audiences experience IMMA. You will work with the team to ensure every interaction reflects our values of openness, inclusion, and creativity. This is a unique opportunity to have a lasting impact on our team and how audiences engage with contemporary art and public space.

Your Purpose
As part of the Senior Management Team at IMMA, you will:

• Lead the strategic development of visitor experience and security across IMMA’s campus and off-site facilities.
• Champion a culture of hospitality, accessibility, and innovation.
• Ensure the highest standards of fire safety and engagement for all audiences.
• Play a key role in shaping IMMA’s future as a radically public, purpose-driven institution.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership
• Develop and deliver a bold visitor experience strategy aligned with IMMA’s vision.
• Use audience insights and data to drive continuous improvement.
• Inspire and empower a team of over 40 staff across visitor engagement, retail, security, and administration.

Visitor Experience & Engagement
• Shape the visitor journey from gate to gate, ensuring every touchpoint is welcoming and inclusive.
• Collaborate with programming and learning teams to deliver story-rich engagement.
• Lead training and development to foster a culture of excellence and creativity.

Security, Fire Safety & Risk Management
• Act as IMMA’s Nominated Fire Officer and lead on all aspects of security and emergency planning and compliance.
• Oversee the protection of artworks, buildings, and people through robust systems and protocols.
• Liaise with the OPW and statutory bodies to ensure compliance and best practice.

Team Leadership & Culture
• Build a high-performing, collaborative team culture rooted in trust and shared purpose.
• Provide clear direction, coaching, and professional development opportunities.
• Encourage innovation and empower staff to contribute ideas that enhance the visitor journey.

What You Bring

Experience
• Proven leadership in a senior visitor experience, hospitality, or cultural role.
• Strong background in public safety, risk management, and operational planning.
• Demonstrated success in delivering inclusive, engaging experiences for diverse audiences.

Skills & Attributes
• Strategic thinker with a hands-on, people-first approach.
• Passionate about public engagement and cultural access.
• Calm under pressure, with excellent judgement and communication skills.
• Committed to continuous learning and innovation.

Qualifications
• Relevant degree in hospitality, arts management, or a related field.
• Security/fire safety professional certifications or demonstrable relevant experience in these roles, preferably in a cultural environment
• A full driving licence is desirable

Salary
The salary for this role is in line with public sector pay scales, starting at €74,701.00, Point 1 of the Engineer Grade II (PPC) scale, as of 1st August 2025.

The Full Time Salary Scale: €74,701.00; €76,408.00; €78,110.00; €79,821.00; €81,527.00; €81,981.00; €83,662.00; €85,408.00; LSI 1 €88,250 & LSI 2 €91,100.00

Candidates should note the Irish Museum of Modern Art complies with Department of Public Expenditure, NDP Delivery and Reform and guidelines on public sector pay and conditions of employment and pension provision. Entry level will be at Point 1 of this Grade.

Contract Details
• Contract Type: Full Time, Permanent
• Hours: Tuesday – Saturday 9.15am to 5.30pm. Sunday 11.30am – 5.30pm. It will be expected that the Head of Visitor Experience & Security will work one weekend in three as part of a weekend oversight roster. The successful candidate may also need to be present during evening hours for programming or special events.
