Job Description |
|
Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS) is the National Development Body for Scotland’s museums and galleries. We support a sector of 455 museums and galleries, through strategic investment, workforce development, advice and advocacy. We are a forward facing and inclusive organisation, committed to the ongoing development of a positive culture for our team.
We are looking for a Senior Museum Development Manager to facilitate and support development across the sector in line with Scotland’s Museums and Galleries Strategy. The strategy provides a framework for the sector and MGS to work to ensure the future relevance and resilience of the sector. It centres around three thematic strands of Connection, Resilience and Workforce. We are excited to offer the opportunity to join a job share post leading on the health and wellbeing and education priority areas of the Connection strand.
You will have significant knowledge and understanding of the Scottish museums sector and current issues facing it; and an understanding of education in museums and the role museums can play in supporting health and wellbeing. You will have demonstrable commitment to making Scotland’s museums and galleries accessible to all of Scotland’s communities. With experience of working collaboratively to develop impactful programmes and initiatives, you will build strategic relationships, initiate and oversee development programmes and identify funding opportunities.
As a job share partnership you will have excellent organisational and communication skills, providing collaborative leadership within the Museum Development team, as part of the wider Senior Management team, and to the sector. You will proactively engage with museums and galleries in Scotland to understand and articulate the diverse needs of the sector and turn that into action, building collaborative and enduring relationships and inspiring others to achieve their best.
OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES
• Work with the Head of Museum Development to prioritise the work of the Museum Development Team to ensure effective, coordinated delivery of the Connection strand of the strategy for Scotland’s museums and galleries.
• Lead on delivery of the strategy actions for MGS in relation to the health and wellbeing and education priority areas of the Connection strand, heading up the internal working groups for these areas and coordinating the development of advice and support for the sector.
• Lead and monitor externally funded projects.
• Manage project and core budgets.
• Build supportive working relationships with sector groups and networks and facilitate the establishment of new groups where there are gaps in coverage.
• Initiate and build strategic relationships with sector and non-sector partners, connecting with policy agendas at a local and national level.
• Develop programmes and initiatives that respond to sector support need and identify funding opportunities.
• Work as an effective job share partner, including keeping abreast of work across the Connection strand of the Strategy, in order to deputise for each other.
• Collaborate to maintain and evolve long running programmes such as our knowledge exchange activity.
• Capture sector knowledge through robust use of systems, including the CRM database, and advocating for change and refinement to systems as appropriate.
• Contribute to the development of grant programmes, reflecting sector needs.
The above mentioned tasks and responsibilities constitute an overview and not an exhaustive list. Workload and priorities are ultimately determined by the annual MGS Operational Plan.
