  Job Description
BUILDER AND GENERAL HAND
6 MONTH CONTRACT

The Government of South Georgia & The South Sandwich Islands are seeking build team members to work on South Georgia during the austral summer 2026-27.

We are looking for skilled individuals to join our team on a short-term basis to assist with the smooth running of this globally significant territory. Based on South Georgia, you will be delivering Government operations as part of a mixed discipline on-site team. Travel to the Falkland Islands, where appropriate, and travel between the Falklands and South Georgia, as well as accommodation and subsistence for the period of the contract will be provided by the Government.

For all roles, we are looking for individuals who:-
• Are responsible, self-motivated and conscientious, with an ability to work independently and as part of a small team;
• Are comfortable working in a remote location;
• Are able to repair and maintain interior and exterior of modern building and heritage mixed use buildings.
• Are resourceful, adaptable and can cope with changes made, sometimes at short notice;
• Manage and prioritise own workload in order to complete repairs in a timely manner and in accordance with given timescales.
• Carry out planned preventative building maintenance in line with set programme of works.
• Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean environment, including on-site hazard identification.
• Are confident in making decisions on the ground without immediate supervision;
• Undertake duties at the research station to assist the general running of the base, and playing an active role in domestic support, such as but not limited to: cooking, cleaning and waste management.

The terms
Start Date: mid-Sept 2026 – dependent upon ship schedules
On rotation: 6 months on South Georgia, returning early April 2027

Pay:
Builder: 45hrs/wk @ £25.00 - 27.50/hr
General Hand: 45hrs/wk @ £15.50 - 17.00/hr
